The words themselves seemingly resonate in our collective consciousness\, conjuring images of the silhouettes of misbegotten characters\, toting shovels\, sneaking into a cemetery on a dark night\, intent on their grisly work. While this cliche vignette might seem amusing\, is it true? Or does it obscure an equally macabre but far more true reality? What happens when someone’s remains are raised from the grave? How was it done in the past? Does it still happen today? And if so\, is it even legal? \nTo answer these questions and more\, we hope that you will join us for a very special October edition of the Cemetery Speaker Series to learn\, in a nutshell\, the ins and outs of disinterments\, exhumations\, and grave robbing. \nMark S. Zaid\, a Washington\, D.C. based attorney and legal expert\, will be providing an overview presentation of human exhumations and grave robbing\, drawing from his own experiences throughout his career. After his remarks\, one of our docents will lead attendees on a thematic walking tour of the cemetery grounds related to the cemetery’s history with all types of exhumations\, including the theft of an Attorney General’s skull\, moving a Vice President’s body\, the mass exhumation of Chinese migrants\, and more. \nTickets are only $5 and all proceeds go to benefit our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. Space is limited so be sure to reserve your spot today! Keynote remarks will take place either outside or inside the Chapel\, weather depending\, and the walking tour will take place on the grounds. Regardless of race\, religion\, creed\, or political belief\, Washington DC remains a cosmopolitan city\, a quintessential reflection of American diversity. \nMany groups have contributed to building community and culture in Washington DC\, including Jewish Americans. Their contributions are as rich and varied as Jewishness itself\, reflecting the centrality of Jewish narratives in the nation’s capital. They worked on Capitol Hill in the halls of Congress\, fighting for justice. They founded community organizations\, helping build the ties that bind Washingtonians. They established businesses\, pursuing the American dream. They worked in the arts and humanities\, helping individuals explore the depths of human expression. \nThese are just some of the Jewish narratives preserved forever at Historic Congressional Cemetery. Dozens of Jews are interred at Congressional and their stories remain as a testament to the dedication of Jewish Americans to live and thrive in DC. With the global rise of Anti-Semitism\, it is important for all individuals to contemplate the influence of Jewish Americans on Washington history. \nWe invite you to discover Jewish American history and heritage on October 6 at 1:00 PM. DESCRIPTION:Start Time: The 5K begins at 5:30 pm. Registration and packet pickup opens at 4:00 PM. \nCost: $35 for the race \nNot only is this a fun race\, but it comes with the good feeling you get when supporting a non-profit! \nWe are unable to offer refunds or race transfers. ​Our races are rain or shine\, and there is no rain date for the race. \nThe Course:\nOur 5K course is flat\, fast\, and USATF certified. Start and finish are within the cemetery\, and the course goes out on the adjoining Anacostia Trail for a quick out and back. Water is available at the start/finish line and at a water stop around the halfway point of the 5k course. \nAwards:\nPrizes will be rewarded for the top finishers\, including the team with the best collective time! Water and snacks are provided to all race participants. Additional prizes are awarded for the winners of the costume contest. \nShirts:\nWant to dress for the occasion with some Dead Man’s Run swag? You are in luck! You may purchase an official race shirt using the link here. \nDogs:\nWe do allow strollers and dogs on this course. However\, please keep in mind that all those with dogs and strollers will be asked to start at the back of the group to minimize confusion. Please no retractable leashes! \nChildren’s Race:\nWe are also offering a children’s race prior to the start of the 5k. Participation in the children’s run is free for any child who has a parent\, guardian\, or friend registered for the 5K. Children may still participate\, if no runners are registered\, for a $5 fee. Registration for the children’s race is in our chapel the day of the race and a parent or guardian must sign a waiver. \nRegistration:\nThere is no pre-race packet pickup. All bib pickup will occur prior to the race in our chapel. Bib pickup begins at 4:00 PM in the Chapel. \nCostume Contest:\nDressing for the occasion? In addition to prizes for the top finishers\, a panel of judges will award prizes to the top individual and team costumes. Entry into the contest is on race day only. Find our judges near the starting line\, fill out a small registration card\, and the judges will check out your costume. Many of the people at the center of these scandals—or who became infamous themselves—lived\, worked\, and died in the nation’s capital. But who were these individuals? What are their stories? \nThis fall\, we invite you to uncover tales of scandal from the residents of Congressional Cemetery—a macabre glimpse into D.C.’s notorious past. Discover how their legacies endure in our collective memory. Encounter those shrouded in the past\, brought vividly to life by our talented actors\, and witness them as they tell their stories. Join us for Soul Strolls 2024: Scandal and Slander. \nOur annual twilight tours explore the stories of individuals buried here through a guided lantern lit tour of the grounds with costumed interpreters. Experience the history of this hallowed ground exactly the way it should be experienced in October – in twilight and darkness\, immersed in vignettes of the lives of our interred residents. \nDetails: \nSoul Strolls take place over four nights\, October 18-19 and October 25-26. Hour-long tours depart every 15 minutes between 6:00 and 9:30 pm on Fridays (Oct 18\, Oct 25) and between 5:00 PM- 9:30 PM on Saturdays (Oct 19\, Oct 26). Gates open a half hour prior to the first tour start time. We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes prior to your tour start time. Tours depart from the chapel\, also known as the “Tavern of Lost Souls” during the event. Come and enjoy live music\, thematic cocktails\, and the ambiance of an evening in the cemetery. DESCRIPTION:Many of the interred residents at Congressional Cemetery unfortunately endured traumatic and unfortunate deaths. Murders\, suicides\, executions\, and accidents are just some of the catastrophes which marked the ends of some of those buried at the cemetery. Individuals from David Herold\, an infamous Lincoln assassination conspirator\, to the Reed family\, tragically killed in a steamboat accident\, are all covered on the tour. To learn more about the stories of their untimely demises\, please join one of our docents for a specialty tour of the cemetery grounds which highlights these unfortunate episodes. \nTickets are $5 per person. Join our Writing Group: Mausoleums and Manuscripts! \nIn our pursuit to support the arts\, we’ve decided to invite the artists to us by creating a community of authors. Every other Saturday\, barring major event programming\, we will have M&M Writing Group meet in the gatehouse at 10 AM for two hours of support\, accountability\, and dedictated time to hone your writing craft. Snacks\, tea\, and coffee will be available\, and writing prompts and exercises will be provided! \nTo make sure we have enough room and resources\, each week will be limited to 15 people\, so sign up fast if you’re interested! DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided tour of Congressional Cemetery! Over 67\,000 people are interred at Congressional Cemetery\, ranging from 1807 all the way until the present day. Their stories are American history in microcosm\, all in 35 acres of the nation’s capital. Come and experience their extraordinary lives in a one of kind portal into the past. In this 1 hour to 1 hour and 30-minute tour\, one of our trained docents who will share the stories of some of Congressionals’s interred residents while walking the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. \n \nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is closed to dogs on Saturdays from 11am – 3pm. \nReservations are required and a tour reservation is a $5 donation. \nSaturday tours begin at 11 am\, rain or shine. Visitors may meet docents at the front gate of the cemetery located at the corner of E St. and Potomac Ave. \nReserve your spot here!\n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an extraordinary celebration of Dia De Los Muertos at Historic Congressional Cemetery. In collaboration with special guest and Capitol Hill resident\, Rosa Moreno\, we will transform the chapel in the center of our grounds into a place of learning\, remembrance\, and celebration of the “Day of the Dead.” \n“I have been in DC for 14 years and a resident of the Capitol Hill area. I was born and raised in the southwest\, AZ and TX. I come from a Mexican-American family that has been in the southwestern part of the country for generations. \nDay of the dead is one of my favorite holidays because we get to set aside a day to celebrate our loved ones that have passed. It’s a festive celebration full of life and joy. \nIt’s a great pleasure to celebrate this year in such a historic and treasured location.  Excited to come together with our neighbors to share this special occasion.” \nDia de Los Muertos is a celebration that honors ancestors and connects the living with the dead. For our celebration\, we welcome the public to join us in the spirit of the holiday by bringing your memories to add to a community ofrenda at the cemetery. Bring photos of people you have loved and have lost to death as well as mementoes representing them: the foods and symbols of the things they loved and memories you shared. We will share stories about those who are gone\, learn about the traditions of Dia De Los Muertos and similar customs around the world\, and join the community around remembrance and mourning. \nOn November 2 at 11am\, guests are invited to join us at the historic chapel in the center of the cemetery where an enormous community ofrenda will honor the ancestors. The public is welcomed to bring photos of loved ones to add to the community ofrenda\, as well as foods to share that your person or people enjoyed. Join us to decorate sugar skulls\, make paper flowers\, and learn about the holiday. No experience necessary. \nIn addition\, the cemetery is collaborating with Crayola Flowers for a special way to celebrate the holiday\, beautify our grounds\, and honor those buried at our historic cemetery. Participants can purchase flowers to bring to the graves of loved ones and any graves with special meaning to you. The cemetery will also have flowers available for our Dia De Los Muertos participants to decorate graves of your choice throughout the cemetery. \nAt the end of the celebration we will gather outside in a procession around the chapel and out to open the gate to bid the ancestors farewell\, inviting them to return again next year. \nAre you joining us? SUMMARY:Mostly Mothers: The Eternal Maternal Guided Tour
DESCRIPTION:This tour focuses exclusively on women for whom motherhood was central to their identities\, their lives\, and sometimes their deaths. Women celebrated on this tour may have been biological mothers\, such as Lucy Bell\, who devoted her life to fighting for her family’s freedom from slavery\, and expectant mother Sarah Reed\, who died reportedly trying to save her stepchildren during the explosion of the steamship Wawaset.  Others are metaphorical\, like Mother of Gay Rights Barbara Gittings\, or whimsical\, like Flora Darling\, founder of “Daughters of” organizations\, such as the DAR.  Walk among two centuries of motherhood at Congressional as we honor the public and private roles of some of our female residents. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is open to dogs on Sundays. Please be aware of that off-leash dogs will be on the grounds at the time of the tour. \nReservations are required and a tour reservation is a $10 donation. \nSunday tours begin at 1:00 PM\, rain or shine. DESCRIPTION:Please join Congressional Cemetery and the Marine Band for a celebration of the life and legacy of John Philip Sousa.
