DESCRIPTION:In partnership with Just Walk\, join us for a Halloween Pet Portrait event in your pup’s favorite place! Options for portraits include either dog or family style. Plan to dress up you and your dog in your favorite spooky season looks! \nPortraits will take place between the Chapel and the Sousa family plot. \nThe cemetery will remain open to the public and off leash dog walkers. \nJust Walk is a worker-owned business providing dog walking services in Washington D.C. We have been photographing our pet pals since 2011. You can check out their daily pictures on Instagram @justwalkdilps and at their website here! \nRegister Here!\n \nQ&A \nWhen will the event take place? \nThe pet portrait will take place Sunday\, October 4th from 11 am – 3 pm. Tickets are sold in timed slots. Please arrive on time! \nDo I have to be a K9 member to go? \nNo\, this event is open to the public and their well-socialized dogs. Day passes are not required. \nHow will this work? \nSign up for an available time slot. The pop-up studio will be outdoors. Photos will be posted to the Just Walk Photos website 48 hours after the event. From there\, participants will be able to view and download their pictures. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, October 10 at 5:00 PM for Congressional Cemetery’s annual fall 5K fundraiser. This death-defying race begins inside the cemetery before continuing onto the Anacostia Trail for a spooky evening run filled with music\, costumes\, and frightful fun. \nWhether you’re racing for a personal best\, walking with friends\, or simply trying to stay ahead of your grave\, Dead Man’s Run is one of the region’s most unique fall 5Ks. Costumes are encouraged\, with prizes awarded for best individual costume and best team costume. Form a team\, get creative with your team name\, and compete for prizes recognizing top overall finishers\, age-group winners\, and best team time. \nRegister by August 1 to take advantage of early bird pricing. This year\, all participants who register by September 20 will receive a complimentary race shirt. Registrants after September 20 will receive a shirt while supplies last. \nAll proceeds from Dead Man’s Run support Historic Congressional Cemetery\, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of this National Historic Landmark. \nFounded in 1807\, Historic Congressional Cemetery is a 35-acre active burial ground in Washington\, D.C.\, with more than 70\,000 interments. The cemetery is the final resting place of many notable Americans\, including members of Congress\, public servants\, veterans\, artists\, activists\, and Washingtonians from all walks of life. Today\, Congressional Cemetery remains both a sacred historic landscape and a vibrant community space\, sustained through public programs\, preservation efforts\, and the support of those who visit\, run\, walk\, and gather here. \nStart Time: The 5K begins at 5:00 pm. \nCost (Includes T-shirt if ordered before September 20th): \nEarly Bird [BEFORE August 2nd]: $30 \nStandard: $40 \nNot only is this a fun race\, but it comes with the good feeling you get when supporting a non-profit! \nWe are unable to offer refunds or race transfers. ​Our races are rain or shine\, and there is no rain date for the race. \nThe Course:\nOur 5K course is flat\, fast\, and USATF certified. Start and finish are within the cemetery\, and the course goes out on the adjoining Anacostia Trail for a quick out and back. Water is available at the start/finish line and at a water stop around the halfway point of the 5k course. \nAwards:\nPrizes will be rewarded for the top finishers\, including the team with the best collective time! Water and snacks are provided to all race participants. Additional prizes are awarded for the winners of the costume contest. \nDogs:\nWe do allow strollers and dogs on this course. However\, please keep in mind that all those with dogs and strollers will be asked to start at the back of the group to minimize confusion. Please no retractable leashes! \nChildren’s Race:\nWe are also offering a children’s race prior to the start of the 5k. Participation in the children’s run is free for any child who has a parent\, guardian\, or friend registered for the 5K. Children may still participate\, if no runners are registered\, for a $5 fee. Registration for the children’s race is in our chapel the day of the race and a parent or guardian must sign a waiver. \nRegistration:\nRegistration and packet pickup opens at 9:00 AM on October 9th at the Gatehouse back porch and goes until 5:00 PM. On October 10 (race day) it opens 3:00 PM in the Chapel. \nAwards: \nPrizes will be rewarded for the top individual performers overall and for age groups. A prize will also be awarded to the team with the best collective time! Water and snacks are provided to all race participants. Additional prizes are awarded for the winners of the costume contest (individual and team!). \nRegistration: \nPre-Race bib and shirt pickup is available near the HCC back porch on Friday\, October 09 from 9:00 AM-5:00 PM. Their legacies offer insight into the evolution of U.S. government policy and the treatment of American Indians in the nineteenth century. Congressional Cemetery Executive Director Mark Hudson will provide context for these policies before embarking on a tour of gravesites dedicated to honoring these individuals and sharing their stories. \n \nTickets are only $10 and all proceeds go to benefitting our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. DESCRIPTION:The United States was founded upon powerful ideals: freedom\, equality\, liberty\, and representative government. 250 years ago\, the Declaration of Independence boldly declared the birth of a new age of freedom\, asserting that “All men are created equal.”\nYet\, the United States failed to be what it imagined itself to be. Enslavement persisted. Women were denied political and legal equality. Native nations were displaced and brutalized. People without wealth\, status\, or social power were routinely excluded from the country’s promises. \nOver time\, America’s true form emerged and it was shaped by Americans who refused to accept these inequities. Across generations\, activists\, agitators\, freedom seekers\, reformers\, and ordinary individuals pushed the nation closer to the ideals it claimed to represent. \nIn recognition and celebration of America’s 250th anniversary and brought to life by Congressional Cemetery’s interred residents\, Soul Strolls: Becoming America explores this contested space between ideals and reality. Through the stories of those who came before\, visitors will consider not only the values of America’s founding\, but how generations of people have embodied what America truly is. \nOur annual lantern-lit twilight tours bring the cemetery’s history to life through immersive performances by costumed interpreters. Journey through the grounds after dark\, encounter Congressional Cemetery’s interred residents\, and discover the lives and legacies that helped shape the nation. \nGuests are encouraged to arrive early before their scheduled tour to enjoy live music\, refreshments\, and the atmosphere of an October evening in the cemetery. We plan to have a food truck available each evening\, along with drinks and other refreshments for purchase. \nAttendee costumes are welcomed and encouraged! \n\nTickets available here!\nDetails:\nSoul Strolls take place over 6 nights\, October 16-17\, October 23-24\, and October 30-31. Hour-long tours depart every 10 minutes. The major change to Soul Strolls 2026 is our new tour queue system. When purchasing your ticket\, you will select a tour queue time. The time on your ticket is the time by which you must be checked in and standing in the tour queue. We recommend arriving at least 30 minutes prior to your tour queue time to enjoy live music\, thematic cocktails\, and the ambiance of an evening in the cemetery. This is your chance to experience our one of a kind Lincoln Assassination Tour if you missed the Cemetery Speaker Series earlier this year. \nOn Friday\, April 14\, 1865\, President Abraham Lincoln was shot while watching a play at Ford’s Theatre. The assassin\, actor John Wilkes Booth\, jumped to the stage floor and fled. President Lincoln died as a result of his wound the following morning. With Booth’s escape\, the largest manhunt in American history ensued\, as law enforcement and military searched for the assassin. Aided by fellow conspirators such as David Herold\, Booth evaded authorities until Union Army soldiers located Booth at a Virginia farm. Surrounded\, Booth was shot and killed in that fateful confrontation. Eventually\, eight other conspirators were implicated in the conspiracy. After a trial by military tribunal\, four were imprisoned and four others\, including Herold\, were executed. \n \nThe story of the 16th president’s assassination is a well known one. Hundreds of books\, thousands of articles\, and dozens of special exhibits are just some of the ways this story has been told. But have you ever seen the story told using the graves of those involved with the assassination? On this tour of approximately 90 minutes\, one of our trained docents will share with you the stories of some of Congressional’s interred residents while walking the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. \n \n\nTickets are only $5 and all proceeds go to benefitting our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an extraordinary celebration of Día de los Muertos at Historic Congressional Cemetery. In collaboration with special guest and Capitol Hill resident\, Rosa Moreno\, and Death Doula-in-Residence\, Laura Lyster-Mensh\, we will transform the chapel in the center of our grounds into a place of learning\, remembrance\, community gathering\, and celebration of the “Day of the Dead.” \nDía de los Muertos is a tradition that honors loved ones who have passed\, celebrating the ongoing bond between the living and the dead. Millions in Mexico\, Latin America\, and beyond celebrate by creating colorful ofrendas (altars) with photos\, flowers\, food\, and mementos to welcome spirits back to the earthly world. Many also gather in cemeteries or at festivals to share music\, meals\, and remembrance in a joyful celebration of life. \nNow in its second year\, Congressional Cemetery’s Día de los Muertos celebration invites the public to join us on Sunday\, November 1st from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at the historic chapel to collectively build a large-scale ofrenda honoring our departed loved ones. \n \nAs Rosa Moreno shares\, “Day of the Dead is one of my favorite holidays because we get to set aside a day to celebrate our loved ones that have passed. It’s a festive celebration full of life and joy”. \n \nEveryone is welcome to bring photos of departed loved ones\, some of their favorite foods\, mementos\, flowers (fresh or dried)\, and/or other cherished artifacts from their lives. You can also make something on-site during the event. We will have a variety of hands-on crafts and activities for all ages\, including decorating sugar skulls and crafting paper flowers. You can add your creations to the ofrenda during the event and take them home afterward as a keepsake.  In celebrating the people and things they loved\, we will share stories about those who are gone\, learn about the traditions of Día de los Muertos and similar customs around the world\, and join the community around remembrance and celebration. \n  \nAll are welcome to this all ages event.
