Over 67\,000 people are interred at Congressional Cemetery\, ranging from 1807 all the way until the present day. Their stories are American history in microcosm\, all in 35 acres of the nation’s capital. Come and experience their extraordinary lives in a one of kind portal into the past. On this tour of approximately 90 minutes\, one of our trained docents will share with you the stories of some of Congressional’s interred residents while walking the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. \n \n\nTickets are only $5 and all proceeds go to benefitting our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. This is a non-refundable donation.\n\n\n\nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. Tours are rain or shine. It’s a two-hour work time for creative projects like writing\, visual arts\, fiber arts and more. Meet other creative people and make progress on your projects in the inspiring environment of HCC. It’s completely free join! \nCreative Crypt will have two categories: silent workshops and chatty workshops. \nSilent workshops are a quiet workspace with very limited talking. This time encourages you to get into a workflow in an environment with other creatives. Headphones are allowed. \nChatty workshops are just that – a time to chat and work. This is perfect for getting to know other creatives and getting feedback and advice on your work. These will workshop types will alternate\, so check out the dates below. We suggest graphite\, colored pencils\, yarns/threads\, and easy to clean materials. Please bring a cutting mat for any blades. Oil paint\, glitter (including glitter glue)\, and aerosols cans are not permitted. If you’re not sure about a material\, please email us with any questions. SUMMARY:Battle of Bladensburg Wreath Laying Ceremony with the District of Columbia National Guard
DESCRIPTION:As the nation commemorates America 250\, Historic Congressional Cemetery and the District of Columbia National Guard invite the public to reflect not only on the ideals declared in 1776\, but also on the generations of Americans who were later called upon to defend the young republic. \nOn August 23\, please join Historic Congressional Cemetery in collaboration with the District of Columbia National Guard for a Battle of Bladensburg commemoration beginning at 10:00 a.m. The ceremony will honor the dozens of D.C. Militia members buried at Congressional Cemetery who fought in the battle \nThis year marks the 212th anniversary of the Battle of Bladensburg\, fought during the War of 1812. The battle was the first in a series of major engagements between American and British forces during the Chesapeake Campaign of 1814. It resulted in a decisive British victory and an embarrassing defeat for the United States\, clearing the way for British troops to enter Washington and burn several of the nation’s most important public buildings. \nAlthough the retreat derisively remembered as the “Bladensburg Races” remains an infamous moment in American military history\, it was also a defeat from which the United States quickly learned. Only several weeks later\, American forces successfully defended Baltimore and repelled the British advance at Fort McHenry. \n \nThe Battle of Bladensburg remains embedded in the history and identity of the District of Columbia National Guard. Citizen-soldiers serving in the 1st and 2nd District of Columbia Militia Regiments helped defend the capital. They were artisans\, shopkeepers\, printers\, teamsters\, dock workers\, lawyers\, clerks\, teachers\, and doctors who served before\, during\, and after the events of August 24\, 1814. Dozens of these individuals are interred at Historic Congressional Cemetery. \nThe program will feature remarks from Congressional Cemetery and the DC National Guard\, followed by a wreath laying at the grave of Private Andrew Coyle. \nFollowing the ceremony\, attendees are invited to participate in a guided tour highlighting veterans of the Battle of Bladensburg and the War of 1812 who are buried at Congressional Cemetery. Participants will also help place commemorative flags at their gravesites. \nRSVP\nThe ceremony is free to attend\, but we ask that guests please RSVP here. \nThe event will take place rain or shine. Smoking is prohibited\, and dogs may not attend unless they are service animals. \nWe highly recommend dressing for the weather and wearing appropriate footwear because of the cemetery’s uneven ground. \nGetting Here\nWe strongly encourage visitors to use public transportation. The closest Metro station is Stadium-Armory\, served by the Orange\, Blue\, and Silver lines.

These are intimate informal gatherings where we discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea to remind us of comfort and sweetness even in difficult times. There is no agenda other than providing a space for an open-ended conversation. \nPlease join us to explore these topics in the spirit of curiosity and wonder. These gatherings are not meant to offer or replace grief counseling. It’s a two-hour work time for creative projects like writing\, visual arts\, fiber arts and more. Meet other creative people and make progress on your projects in the inspiring environment of HCC. It’s completely free join! \nCreative Crypt will have two categories: silent workshops and chatty workshops. \nSilent workshops are a quiet workspace with very limited talking. This time encourages you to get into a workflow in an environment with other creatives. Headphones are allowed. \nChatty workshops are just that – a time to chat and work. This is perfect for getting to know other creatives and getting feedback and advice on your work. These will workshop types will alternate\, so check out the dates below.
