These are intimate informal gatherings where we discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea to remind us of comfort and sweetness even in difficult times. There is no agenda other than providing a space for an open-ended conversation. \nPlease join us to explore these topics in the spirit of curiosity and wonder. These gatherings are not meant to offer or replace grief counseling. In the interest of privacy and being present\, we ask that these conversations remain in the room and there be no recording\, note-taking\, or personal details shared afterward. \nFollow this link for more about Death Cafe history and concept. \nOur Death Doula in Residence\, Laura Lyster-Mensh\, facilitates our death cafes and represents the cemetery for these evenings with a range of guest co-facilitators from the community. \nCongressional Cemetery offers these unique conversations free of charge\, and offers tea and sweets in the tradition of death cafes around the world. Sons of the American Revolution and the National Cemetery Administration\, invites the public to join us on Saturday\, July 4\, 2026\, for a special America 250 commemoration honoring Elbridge Gerry and the Revolutionary War veterans memorialized at Congressional Cemetery.\n\n\n\nFounding Father and Revolutionary War Patriot Elbridge Gerry is the only signer of the Declaration of Independence and the only vice president buried in Washington\, D.C. His historic gravesite at Congressional Cemetery remains an enduring place of national memory and reflection\, linking the nation’s founding generation to the present day.\n\n\nBeginning at 10:00 AM\, the ceremony will feature remarks from representatives of Historic Congressional Cemetery\, the D.C. Sons of the American Revolution\, and the National Cemetery Administration. The program will include the presentation of colors\, the National Anthem\, the playing of TAPS\, unveiling a new interpretive sign\, and a wreath and flower laying at Gerry’s grave in honor of his service to the founding of the United States and the enduring legacy of the Revolutionary generation.\n\n\n\nA tent and complimentary refreshments will be provided courtesy of the DC Sons of the American Revolution.\n\nThe event is free and open to the public. Do the fright thing and get into the Summerween spirit with a killer lineup of local comedians in the (air-conditioned!) Congressional Cemetery Chapel. Wear your spookiest summer style and come early to grab some boo(!)ze and explore the grounds – we’re dying to see you there.\n– Headliner Griefcat with Violet Gray\, Kade Wonders\, Jelani Wills\, Maddie Pickens\, and host Dana Fleitman!\nDoors and bar open one hour before the start time. Come early and walk the cemetery with a self-guided tour\, then grab a drink and an ice cream treat (no tricks\, we promise!) Her style of humor is a direct manifestation of her inattentive ADHD: dry\, cerebral\, and quietly chaotic. While hospices and families focus on comfort care\, dignity\, and legacy\, these are not always available for incarcerated people. \nThe setting for this gathering is particularly meaningful because Congressional Cemetery and the DC Jail share a wall\, reminding us that issues of mortality and humanity exist side by side. \nThis free screening of Prison Terminal\, the Oscar-nominated documentary short directed by Edgar Barens\, explores the end of life faced by individuals whose decisions and activities are determined by prison authorities. The filmmaker of Prison Terminal spent six months with incarcerated men who were aging and dying\, prison staff\, and incarcerated peer caregivers. The documentary focuses on one incarcerated man\, Jack Hall\, a U.S. war veteran convicted of murder\, and the incarcerated men who cared for him as he declined and died. \nThe film’s director\, Edgar Barens\, and representatives of the Humane Prison Hospice Project\, will join us for a panel discussion following the screening\, facilitated by DC Death Collective members. \nCome view the film and join us to discuss the growth of programs in U.S. prisons that expand dignified\, compassionate care for incarcerated people as they age and die. Bring your journalling\, drawing\, knitting\, and more! \nWhat materials are permitted? \nWater-soluble and non-toxic materials are permitted. This workshop takes place in a historic building\, therefore we cannot allow materials that will stain\, require ventilation\, or may harm others in the workshop. We suggest graphite\, colored pencils\, yarns/threads\, and easy to clean materials. Please bring a cutting mat for any blades. Oil paint\, glitter (including glitter glue)\, and aerosols cans are not permitted. If you’re not sure about a material\, please email us with any questions. HCC Staff will ask you to remove any materials deemed harmful to the building\, cemetery\, or other participants of Creative Crypt. \nIs food permitted? \nYes\, feel free to bring a snack and covered beverage with you! \nIs there a sink? \nNo industrial sinks are available. Please plan to clean and dispose of materials when you get home. \nCan I work in the Cemetery? \nYes! Please do not lean on headstones or use them as a surface. Rubbings are not permitted as they can damage headstones. \n

DESCRIPTION:In partnership with Just Walk\, join us for a Sunset and Cemetery Pet Portraits in your pup’s favorite place! Options include dog-centered or family style portraits. Plan to dress up your dog and yourself in your favorite summer looks and enjoy the golden splendor of the setting sun! \nPortraits will take place between the Chapel and the Sousa family plot. \nThe cemetery will remain open to the public and off leash dog walkers. Walk ups will be available on a limited basis. \nJust Walk is a worker-owned business providing dog walking services in Washington D.C. They have been photographing your pet pals since 2011. You can check out their daily pictures on Instagram @justwalkdilps and at their website here! \nGet tickets here!\n \n————————————————– \nQ&A \nWhen will the event take place? \nThe pet portrait will take place Saturday\, July 25\, 2026 from 6 – 8pm. Tickets are sold in timed slots. Please arrive on time! \nDo I have to be a K9 Corps member to go? \nNo\, this event is open to the public and their well socialized dogs. Day passes are not required to attend this event. \nHow will this work? \nSign up for an available time slot. The pop up studio will be outdoors. Photos will posted to the Just Walk Photos website 48 hours after the event. From there\, participants will be able to view and download their pictures.
