On this tour of approximately 90 minutes\, one of our trained docents will share with you the stories of some of Congressional’s interred residents while walking the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. \n \n\nTickets are only $5 and all proceeds go to benefitting our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. This is a non-refundable donation.\n\n\n\nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. Tours are rain or shine. DESCRIPTION:  \nAdditional Information:\nRegistration: \nRegistration opens on February 6! \nStart Time: The 5K begins at 9:00 AM inside the cemetery. Registration begins at 7:30 AM in the Chapel.\n \nPre Race Packet Pickup: April 8-April 10\, 9:00 AM-5:00 PM  at the Congressional Cemetery Gatehouse. \nCost: $40 for the race ($35 early bird pricing for all reservations prior to February 23!) \nNot only is this a fun race\, but it comes with the good feeling you get when supporting a non-profit! \nWe are unable to offer refunds or race transfers. \nThe Course: \n \nStart and finish are within the cemetery\, and the course goes out on the adjoining Anacostia Trail for a quick out and back. Water is available at the start/finish line and at a water stop around the halfway point of the 5k course. \n \nAwards: \nPrizes will be rewarded for the top individual performers overall and for age group. A prize will also be awarded to the team with the best collective time! Water and snacks are provided to all race participants \nDogs:  \nWe do allow strollers and dogs on this course for registered runners. Keep in mind the cemetery is closed to dog walking for the duration for the race\, but leashed pups running with their registered humans are welcome! In addition\, please keep in mind that all those with dogs and strollers will be asked to start at the back of the group to minimize confusion. Please no retractable leashes! \nChildren’s Race: \nWe are also offering a children’s race prior to the start of the 5k. Participation in the children’s run is free for any child who has a parent\, guardian\, or friend registered for the 5K. Children may still participate\, if no runners are registered\, for a $5 fee. SUMMARY:Cemetery Speaker Series: Lincoln Assassination\, with Daiya Malone
DESCRIPTION:SIGN UP HERE!\nDavid Herold\, (LOC) \nOn Friday\, April 14\, 1865\, President Abraham Lincoln was shot in the head while watching a play at Ford’s Theatre. The assassin\, actor John Wilkes Booth\, jumped to the stage floor and fled. President Lincoln died as a result of his wound the following morning. With Booth’s escape\, the largest manhunt in American history ensued\, as law enforcement and military searched for the assassin. Aided by fellow conspirators such as David Herold\, Booth evaded authorities until Union Army soldiers located Booth at a Virginia farm. Surrounded\, Booth was shot and killed in that fateful confrontation. Eventually\, eight other conspirators were implicated in the conspiracy. After a trial by military tribunal\, four were imprisoned and four others\, including Herold\, were executed. \nThe story of the 16th president’s assassination is a well known one. Hundreds of books\, thousands of articles\, and dozens of special exhibits are just some of the ways this story has been told. But have you ever seen the story told using the graves of those involved with the assassination? \nIn partnership with our friends at Ford’s Theatre\, please join us on Saturday\, April 18th from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM for a special event. One part speaking engagement and one part docent-led tour\, this first entry in our 2026 Cemetery Speaker Series features keynote remarks on the Lincoln Assassination from Ford’s Theatre’s Daiya Malone\, followed by a complimentary docent-led tour of the gravesites of individuals related to the assassination\, including David Herold\, Charles Forbes\, and others. \nHCC is thrilled to welcome Daiya Malone as this event’s speaker. Malone is the Interpretive Programs Manager at Ford’s Theatre\, developing interpretive resources for students\, teachers\, and general audiences. She is passionate about creating exciting and dynamic ways to engage with history for all learners. Before joining Ford’s Education last year\, Daiya worked as a museum operations manager and an exhibitions manager. She has an M.A. in Art History from American University and a B.A. in Humanities from The King’s College. \nTickets are only $10 and all proceeds go to benefitting our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. DESCRIPTION:We welcome you to join us at one of our monthly Death Cafes at Historic Congressional Cemetery. \nAs an active burial ground\, Historic Congressional Cemetery is well acquainted with death\, but just what is a Death Cafe? \nDeath Cafe is a global movement to encourage discussion about the often-taboo subject of death. These are intimate informal gatherings where we discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea to remind us of comfort and sweetness even in difficult times. There is no agenda other than providing a space for an open-ended conversation. \nPlease join us to explore these topics in the spirit of curiosity and wonder. These gatherings are not meant to offer or replace grief counseling. In the interest of privacy and being present\, we ask that these conversations remain in the room and there be no recording\, note-taking\, or personal details shared afterward. \nFollow this link for more about Death Cafe history and concept. \nOur Death Doula in Residence\, Laura Lyster-Mensh\, facilitates our death cafes and represents the cemetery for these evenings with a range of guest co-facilitators from the community. \nCongressional Cemetery offers these unique conversations free of charge\, and offers tea and sweets in the tradition of death cafes around the world.
