Through audio clips from both well-known leaders and long-overlooked voices\, the movement unfolds in a way that is immediate\, human\, and deeply resonant. \nThis 45-minute presentation\, followed by a Q&A\, invites us to slow down and listen—to understand history not just as something that happened\, but as something experienced. \nThe evening will also include a guided LGBTQ+ grave tour of the cemetery\, offering the opportunity to walk among the resting places of individuals whose lives intersect with the broader story of LGBTQ+ history. DESCRIPTION:As the nation commemorates America 250\, Historic Congressional Cemetery and the District of Columbia National Guard invite the public to reflect not only on the ideals declared in 1776\, but also on the generations of Americans who were later called upon to defend the young republic. \nOn August 23\, please join Historic Congressional Cemetery in collaboration with the District of Columbia National Guard for a Battle of Bladensburg commemoration beginning at 10:00 a.m. The ceremony will honor the dozens of D.C. Militia members buried at Congressional Cemetery who fought in the battle \nThis year marks the 212th anniversary of the Battle of Bladensburg\, fought during the War of 1812. The battle was the first in a series of major engagements between American and British forces during the Chesapeake Campaign of 1814. It resulted in a decisive British victory and an embarrassing defeat for the United States\, clearing the way for British troops to enter Washington and burn several of the nation’s most important public buildings. \nAlthough the retreat derisively remembered as the “Bladensburg Races” remains an infamous moment in American military history\, it was also a defeat from which the United States quickly learned. Only several weeks later\, American forces successfully defended Baltimore and repelled the British advance at Fort McHenry. \n \nThe Battle of Bladensburg remains embedded in the history and identity of the District of Columbia National Guard. Citizen-soldiers serving in the 1st and 2nd District of Columbia Militia Regiments helped defend the capital. They were artisans\, shopkeepers\, printers\, teamsters\, dock workers\, lawyers\, clerks\, teachers\, and doctors who served before\, during\, and after the events of August 24\, 1814. Dozens of these individuals are interred at Historic Congressional Cemetery. \nThe program will feature remarks from Congressional Cemetery and the DC National Guard\, followed by a wreath laying at the grave of Private Andrew Coyle. \nFollowing the ceremony\, attendees are invited to participate in a guided tour highlighting veterans of the Battle of Bladensburg and the War of 1812 who are buried at Congressional Cemetery. Participants will also help place commemorative flags at their gravesites. \nRSVP\nThe ceremony is free to attend\, but we ask that guests please RSVP here. \nThe event will take place rain or shine. Smoking is prohibited\, and dogs may not attend unless they are service animals. \nWe highly recommend dressing for the weather and wearing appropriate footwear because of the cemetery’s uneven ground. \nGetting Here\nWe strongly encourage visitors to use public transportation. The closest Metro station is Stadium-Armory\, served by the Orange\, Blue\, and Silver lines.

Their legacies offer insight into the evolution of U.S. government policy and the treatment of American Indians in the nineteenth century. Congressional Cemetery Executive Director Mark Hudson will provide context for these policies before embarking on a tour of gravesites dedicated to honoring these individuals and sharing their stories. \n \nTickets are only $10 and all proceeds go to benefitting our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. This is your chance to experience our one of a kind Lincoln Assassination Tour if you missed the Cemetery Speaker Series earlier this year. \nOn Friday\, April 14\, 1865\, President Abraham Lincoln was shot while watching a play at Ford’s Theatre. The assassin\, actor John Wilkes Booth\, jumped to the stage floor and fled. President Lincoln died as a result of his wound the following morning. With Booth’s escape\, the largest manhunt in American history ensued\, as law enforcement and military searched for the assassin. Aided by fellow conspirators such as David Herold\, Booth evaded authorities until Union Army soldiers located Booth at a Virginia farm. Surrounded\, Booth was shot and killed in that fateful confrontation. Eventually\, eight other conspirators were implicated in the conspiracy. After a trial by military tribunal\, four were imprisoned and four others\, including Herold\, were executed. \n \nThe story of the 16th president’s assassination is a well known one. Hundreds of books\, thousands of articles\, and dozens of special exhibits are just some of the ways this story has been told. But have you ever seen the story told using the graves of those involved with the assassination?
