DESCRIPTION:Many of the interred residents at Congressional Cemetery unfortunately endured traumatic and unfortunate deaths. Murders\, suicides\, executions\, and accidents are just some of the catastrophes which marked the ends of some of those buried at the cemetery. Individuals from David Herold\, an infamous Lincoln assassination conspirator\, to the Reed family\, tragically killed in a steam boat accident\, are all covered on the tour. To learn more about the stories of their untimely demises\, please join one of our docents for a specialty tour of the cemetery grounds which highlights these unfortunate episodes. \nTickets are $5 per person. Comfortable attire is strongly encouraged. DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand and typically offered on Mother’s Day\, this tour focuses exclusively on women for whom motherhood was central to their identities\, their lives and sometimes their deaths. Women celebrated on this tour may have been biological mothers\, such as Lucy Bell\, who devoted her life to fighting for her family’s freedom from slavery\, and expectant mother Sarah Reed\,  who died reportedly trying to save her stepchildren during the explosion of the steamship Wawaset.  Others are metaphorical\, like Mother of Gay Rights Barbara Gittings\, or whimsical\, like Flora Darling\, founder of “Daughters of” organizations\, such as the DAR.  Walk among two centuries of motherhood at Congressional as we honor the public and private roles of some of our female residents. \nTours are limited. DESCRIPTION:As long as human beings have existed\, so too have infectious diseases. These invisible foes of humanity have proliferated and thrived across history\, claiming the lives of untold billions across human history. \nThe Covid-19 Pandemic illustrated to people living today the all too real prevalence of infectious diseases on human societies\, but this relevance is not a new phenomenon. Indeed\, over 100 years ago the 1918 Influenza Pandemic devasted the United States and the world. From September to December 1918 alone\, over 250\,000 people died in the United States from the deadly disease. The  influence of diseases on history are visible across the 35 acres of the cemetery in the form of the various graves and memorials left behind by their victims. \nTo explore the influence of disease on history\, please join us this November for a Cemetery Speaker series event\, with a presentation from a local historian coupled with a thematic tour of the grounds from one of our docents. \nTickets are only $5 and all proceeds benefit our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. SUMMARY:Cemetery Speaker Series: The Lincoln Assassination
DESCRIPTION:On April 14\, 1865\, President Abraham Lincoln was shot in the head while watching a play at Ford’s Theatre. The assassin\, John Wilkes Booth\, jumped to the stage floor and fled. The next day\, April 15\, President Lincoln died as a result of his wounds. With Booth’s escape\, the largest manhunt in American history ensued as law enforcement and military searched for the assassin. Aided by fellow conspirators such as David Herold\, Booth evaded authorities until Army soldiers located Booth at a local farm. Surrounded\, Booth was shot and killed in that fateful confrontation. Eventually\, 8 other conspirators\, including Herold\, were implicated in the conspiracy and subsequently executed after a trial by military tribunal. \nDavid Herold (LOC) \nThe story of the 16th President’s assassination is a well known one. But have you ever seen the story told using the graves of those involved with the assassination? \nIn partnership with our friends at Ford’s Theatre\, please join us on April 14th \, 159 years after Lincoln’s death\, from 1:00 PM-2:30 PM for a special event. One part speaking engagement and one part docent led tour\, the inaugural event in our Cemetery Speaker Series features keynote remarks on the Lincoln Assassination from Ford’s Theatre’s Blake Lindsey followed by a complimentary docent led tour of the gravesites of individuals related to the assassination\, including David Herold\, Charles Forbes\, and others. \nTickets are only $5 and all proceeds go to benefitting our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. Space is limited so be sure to reserve your spot today! Keynote remarks will take place either outside or inside the Chapel\, weather depending and the walking tour will take place on the grounds. The tour is approximately 45 minutes in length.
