The words themselves seemingly resonate in our collective consciousness\, conjuring images of the silhouettes of misbegotten characters\, toting shovels\, sneaking into a cemetery on a dark night\, intent on their grisly work. While this cliche vignette might seem amusing\, is it true? Or does it obscure an equally macabre but far more true reality? What happens when someone’s remains are raised from the grave? How was it done in the past? Does it still happen today? And if so\, is it even legal? \nTo answer these questions and more\, we hope that you will join us for a very special October edition of the Cemetery Speaker Series to learn\, in a nutshell\, the ins and outs of disinterments\, exhumations\, and grave robbing. \nMark S. Zaid\, a Washington\, D.C. based attorney and legal expert\, will be providing an overview presentation of human exhumations and grave robbing\, drawing from his own experiences throughout his career. After his remarks\, one of our docents will lead attendees on a thematic walking tour of the cemetery grounds related to the cemetery’s history with all types of exhumations\, including the theft of an Attorney General’s skull\, moving a Vice President’s body\, the mass exhumation of Chinese migrants\, and more. \nTickets are only $5 and all proceeds go to benefit our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. Space is limited so be sure to reserve your spot today! Keynote remarks will take place either outside or inside the Chapel\, weather depending\, and the walking tour will take place on the grounds. Their contributions are as rich and varied as Jewishness itself\, reflecting the centrality of Jewish narratives in the nation’s capital. They worked on Capitol Hill in the halls of Congress\, fighting for justice. They founded community organizations\, helping build the ties that bind Washingtonians. They established businesses\, pursuing the American dream. They worked in the arts and humanities\, helping individuals explore the depths of human expression. \nThese are just some of the Jewish narratives preserved forever at Historic Congressional Cemetery. Dozens of Jews are interred at Congressional and their stories remain as a testament to the dedication of Jewish Americans to live and thrive in DC. With the global rise of Anti-Semitism\, it is important for all individuals to contemplate the influence of Jewish Americans on Washington history. \nWe invite you to discover Jewish American history and heritage on October 6 at 1:00 PM. SUMMARY:Cemetery Speaker Series: Remembering Daniel Smith\, "Son of a Slave" Author
DESCRIPTION:Son of a man born enslaved in 1863 during the Civil War\, Daniel Smith (1932-2022) was living proof that slavery is not distant history. His father\, 70 years old when Dan was born\, taught him to work hard and carry himself well\, even in difficult circumstances. In his educational\, professional\, and social pursuits\, Dan lived those lessons. He was both witness to and participant in nearly a century of struggle for Black Americans to advance in a nation founded on separatist principles. For the intersections he had with historical events\, political leaders\, and other luminaries\, he is often called the “Black Forrest Gump.” In his memoir Son of a Slave\, completed just before he died on Oct. 19\, 2022 at age 90\, Smith offered a first-hand account of the actions\, policies\, and people that have helped or hindered the United States from fulfilling the promise that “all men are created equal.” \nIn this first 2025 entry of the Cemetery Speaker Series\, Historic Congressional Cemetery welcomes guest speaker Loretta Neumann\, Daniel Smith’s wife\, to reflect on her husband’s life and legacy. \nTickets are only $10 and all proceeds go to benefit our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. SUMMARY:Cemetery Speaker Series: The Lincoln Assassination
DESCRIPTION:On April 14\, 1865\, President Abraham Lincoln was shot in the head while watching a play at Ford’s Theatre. The assassin\, John Wilkes Booth\, jumped to the stage floor and fled. The next day\, April 15th\, President Lincoln died as a result of his wounds. With Booth’s escape\, the largest manhunt in American history ensued as law enforcement and military searched for the assassin. Aided by fellow conspirators such as David Herold\, Booth evaded authorities until Army soldiers located Booth at a Virginia farm. Surrounded\, Booth was shot and killed in that fateful confrontation. Eventually\, eight other conspirators were implicated in the conspiracy. After a trial by military tribunal\, four were imprisoned and four others\, including Herold\, were executed. \nDavid Herold (LOC) \nThe story of the 16th president’s assassination is a well known one. Hundreds of books\, thousands of articles\, and dozens of special exhibits are just some of the ways this story has been told. But have you ever seen the story told using the graves of those involved with the assassination? \nIn partnership with our friends at Ford’s Theatre\, please join us on Saturday\, April 19th from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM for a special event. They established businesses\, pursuing the American dream. Seeking equal rights and protections from discrimination\, gay rights advocacy took on many forms of resistance\, including a symbol seen on graves at Congressional Cemetery\, the Pink Triangle. \nTo explore LGBTQ+ history and gay legacy in the nation’s capital\, we hope that you will join us for a very special WorldPride edition of the Cemetery Speaker Series with LGBTQ+ historian Dr. Jake Desai-Newsome. \nHe will explore the inspiring history of how generations of LGBTQ+ activists transformed the pink triangle from a Nazi concentration camp badge into a powerful call to action for LGBTQ+ pride\, justice\, and community. Drawing from unexplored archival sources and exclusive interviews\, Dr. Desai-Newsome will showcase the ways activists in the US and beyond used the pink triangle – and the history it represented – to fight against injustice in the present. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided tour of Congressional Cemetery! Over 67\,000 people are interred at Congressional Cemetery\, ranging from 1807 all the way until the present day. Their stories are American history in microcosm\, all in 35 acres of the nation’s capital. Come and experience their extraordinary lives in a one of kind portal into the past. In this 60 to 90-minute tour\, one of our trained docents who will share the stories of some of Congressional’s interred residents while walking the beautiful and scenic cemetery grounds. \n \nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is closed to dogs on Saturdays from 11am – 3pm. \nReservations are required and a tour reservation is a $5 donation. \nSaturday tours begin at 11 am\, rain or shine. SUMMARY:Nurses of War Tour\, with Melanie La Force
DESCRIPTION:Find out the true stories of the women who served as nurses in war – their yearning to help\, to change life\, to improve the situation of their sons\, fathers\, and uncles in the field of battle and how with courage and dedication they helped improve the lives of so many. On this tour we will look into the lives of these women and how they contributed to the suffragist movement. \n\nThe docent for this special topic tour is Melanie La Force\, an award -winning professional tourist guide in Washington\, DC. She brings a passion for the human side of history to the artistry of storytelling. She earned a BA in French language and teaching at the University of Illinois\, Champaign-Urbana. She studied Roman History at the Sorbonne in Paris and her love of art and archeology grew. With a Masters Degree in public policy from George Washington University she continued a dedicated career in the federal government. While working internationally for the EPA she saw how much she loved history and travel and earned a Masters in Curriculum Design and then turned to tourist guiding in DC. She developed her own Clara Barton tour and presented it with DC Walking Town and now is offering tours in the DC area. She is a French language tour guide and has developed her own company\, Bonjour La Force\, LLC\, offering tours in French and English in DC and the Baltimore area. \n\nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is closed to dogs on Saturdays from 11am – 3pm. \nReservations are required and a tour reservation is a $10 donation. \nSaturday tours begin at 11 am\, rain or shine.
