SUMMARY:Cemetery Speaker Series: The Battle of Bladensburg and the Burning of Washington
DESCRIPTION:Approximately 210 years ago\, on August 24\, 1814\, American forces under the command of Brigadier General William Winder maneuvered to defend the nation’s capital. Among these Americans were Washingtonians\, citizen soldiers serving in the 1st and 2nd District of Columbia Militia Regiments. These carpenters\, lawyers\, shoemakers\, and citizens of all types rushed to the defend the city against a British strike force. Despite their valor\, American forces were routed and British forces set fire to Washington. Notably\, public buildings such as the President’s House (now known as the White House) and the Washington Navy Yard were put to the torch. Undaunted\, Washingtonians patriotically served before\, during\, and after the events of August 24. American forces would go on to win a decisive victory over the British at the Battle of Baltimore and\, in due course\, rebuild the nation’s capital. \nWe hope that you will join at this special Cemetery Speaker Series event to explore the Battle of Bladensburg and the Burning of Washington. Dr. Glenn F. Williams\, a retired Army officer and historian\, will be providing an overview presentation of the battle. After\, the attendees of the speaker series will join the cemetery staff for a wreath laying ceremony in conjunction with the District of Columbia National Guard. This ceremony is a separate program available to the public for free. Please click here  for more information about the ceremony.  After the ceremony\, ticketed attendees of the Cemetery Speaker Series will join one of our docents for a tour of the graves and memorials associated with the Battle of Bladensburg/Burning of Washington. \nTickets are only $5 and all proceeds go to benefit our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. SUMMARY:Battle of Bladensburg Wreath Laying Ceremony with the District of Columbia National Guard
DESCRIPTION:This year marks the 210th anniversary of The Battle of Bladensburg during the War of 1812. It was the first in a series of major engagements between U.S. and British forces during the Chesapeake Campaign of 1814. The result was a decisive victory for Great Britain and an embarrassing defeat for the United States\, resulting in the raiding and burning of the nation’s capital. Although the “Bladensburg Races” remains an infamous moment in U.S. military history\, it was a defeat from which Americans quickly learned several weeks later during the Battle of Baltimore. \nThe Battle of Bladensburg remains embedded in the DNA of the District of Columbia National Guard. Citizen Soldiers serving in the 1st and 2nd District of Columbia Militia Regiments defended the city. They were artisans\, shopkeepers\, printers\, teamsters\, dock workers\, lawyers\, clerks\, teachers\, and doctors who served valiantly before\, during\, and after the events of August 24. Dozens of these individuals who fought are interred at Historic Congressional Cemetery. \nOn Aug. 24\, we hope that you will join Historic Congressional Cemetery in collaboration with the District of Columbia National Guard for a Battle of Bladensburg wreath ceremony at 11:15 a.m. honoring the dozens of D.C. Militia members buried there who fought in the Battle of Bladensburg. The ceremony will feature remarks from various speakers followed by a wreath laying at the grave of Captain Peter Lenox\, a DC Militia veteran. \nPlease note that this event is running concurrently with the Congressional Cemetery Speaker Series event on the Battle of Bladensburg.  \n \nRSVP\nThe ceremony is free to attend but we ask that you please RSVP here.\nThe event is rain or shine. Smoking is prohibited and dogs are not allowed to attend the event unless they are a service animal. \nWe highly recommend dressing for the elements. Please also wear appropriate footwear due to the uneven ground in the cemetery.  \nGetting Here \nWe strongly encourage public transportation to get to Congressional Cemetery. The closest metro station to Congressional Cemetery is Stadium Armory\, located on the Orange/Blue/Silver lines. Bikes may be locked inside the cemetery. DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand! This is your chance to experience our one of a kind Lincoln Assassination Tour if you missed the Cemetery Speaker Series earlier this year. \nOn April 14\, 1865\, President Abraham Lincoln was shot in the head while watching a play at Ford’s Theatre. The assassin\, John Wilkes Booth\, jumped to the stage floor and fled. The next day\, April 15\, President Lincoln died as a result of his wounds. With Booth’s escape\, the largest manhunt in American history ensued as law enforcement and military searched for the assassin. Aided by fellow conspirators such as David Herold\, Booth evaded authorities until Army soldiers located Booth at a local farm. Surrounded\, Booth was shot and killed in that fateful confrontation. Eventually\, 8 other conspirators\, including Herold\, were implicated in the conspiracy and subsequently executed after a trial by military tribunal. \n \nThe story of the 16th President’s assassination is a well known one. Hundreds of books\, thousands of articles\, and dozens of special exhibits are just some of the ways this story has been told. How was it done in the past? Does it still happen today? And if so\, is it even legal? \nTo answer these questions and more\, we hope that you will join us for a very special October edition of the Cemetery Speaker Series to learn\, in a nutshell\, the ins and outs of disinterments\, exhumations\, and grave robbing. \nMark S. Regardless of race\, religion\, creed\, or political belief\, Washington DC remains a cosmopolitan city\, a quintessential reflection of American diversity. \nMany groups have contributed to building community and culture in Washington DC\, including Jewish Americans. Their contributions are as rich and varied as Jewishness itself\, reflecting the centrality of Jewish narratives in the nation’s capital. They worked on Capitol Hill in the halls of Congress\, fighting for justice. They founded community organizations\, helping build the ties that bind Washingtonians. They established businesses\, pursuing the American dream. They worked in the arts and humanities\, helping individuals explore the depths of human expression. \nThese are just some of the Jewish narratives preserved forever at Historic Congressional Cemetery. Dozens of Jews are interred at Congressional and their stories remain as a testament to the dedication of Jewish Americans to live and thrive in DC. Built to house the seats of federal government\, the nation’s capital soon became a city in its own right\, a place where people lived\, worked\, and\, of course\, died. A mix of congressmen\, merchants\, military officers\, diplomats\, architects\, and enslaved individuals comprised the fabric of the new capital\, an experimental mix of people in an experimental new nation. \nWe invite you to experience the lives of the people in the early days of the Federal City in a new special tour of the cemetery grounds. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is open to dogs on Sundays. SUMMARY:Cemetery Speaker Series: Remembering Daniel Smith\, "Son of a Slave" Author
DESCRIPTION:Son of a man born enslaved in 1863 during the Civil War\, Daniel Smith (1932-2022) was living proof that slavery is not distant history. His father\, 70 years old when Dan was born\, taught him to work hard and carry himself well\, even in difficult circumstances. In his educational\, professional\, and social pursuits\, Dan lived those lessons. He was both witness to and participant in nearly a century of struggle for Black Americans to advance in a nation founded on separatist principles. For the intersections he had with historical events\, political leaders\, and other luminaries\, he is often called the “Black Forrest Gump.” In his memoir Son of a Slave\, completed just before he died on Oct. 19\, 2022 at age 90\, Smith offered a first-hand account of the actions\, policies\, and people that have helped or hindered the United States from fulfilling the promise that “all men are created equal.” \nIn this first 2025 entry of the Cemetery Speaker Series\, Historic Congressional Cemetery welcomes guest speaker Loretta Neumann\, Daniel Smith’s wife\, to reflect on her husband’s life and legacy. \nTickets are only $10 and all proceeds go to benefit our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. SUMMARY:Cemetery Speaker Series: The Lincoln Assassination
DESCRIPTION:On April 14\, 1865\, President Abraham Lincoln was shot in the head while watching a play at Ford’s Theatre. The assassin\, John Wilkes Booth\, jumped to the stage floor and fled. The next day\, April 15th\, President Lincoln died as a result of his wounds. With Booth’s escape\, the largest manhunt in American history ensued as law enforcement and military searched for the assassin. Aided by fellow conspirators such as David Herold\, Booth evaded authorities until Army soldiers located Booth at a Virginia farm. Surrounded\, Booth was shot and killed in that fateful confrontation. Eventually\, eight other conspirators were implicated in the conspiracy. After a trial by military tribunal\, four were imprisoned and four others\, including Herold\, were executed. \nDavid Herold (LOC) \nThe story of the 16th president’s assassination is a well known one. Hundreds of books\, thousands of articles\, and dozens of special exhibits are just some of the ways this story has been told. But have you ever seen the story told using the graves of those involved with the assassination? \nIn partnership with our friends at Ford’s Theatre\, please join us on Saturday\, April 19th from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM for a special event. One part speaking engagement and one part docent-led tour\, this second entry in our 2025 Cemetery Speaker Series features keynote remarks on the Lincoln Assassination from Ford’s Theatre’s Alexandria Wood\, followed by a complimentary docent-led tour of the gravesites of individuals related to the assassination\, including David Herold\, Charles Forbes\, and others. \nTickets are only $10 and all proceeds go to benefitting our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. SUMMARY:Mostly Mothers: The Eternal Maternal Guided Tour
DESCRIPTION:This tour focuses exclusively on women for whom motherhood was central to their identities\, their lives\, and sometimes their deaths. Women celebrated on this tour may have been biological mothers\, such as Lucy Bell\, who devoted her life to fighting for her family’s freedom from slavery\, and expectant mother Sarah Reed\,  who died reportedly trying to save her stepchildren during the explosion of the steamship Wawaset.  Others are metaphorical\, like Mother of Gay Rights Barbara Gittings\, or whimsical\, like Flora Darling\, founder of “Daughters of” organizations\, such as the DAR.  Walk among two centuries of motherhood at Congressional as we honor the public and private roles of some of our female residents. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is open to dogs on Sundays. Please be aware of that off-leash dogs will be on the grounds at the time of the tour. \nReservations are required and a tour reservation is a $10 donation. \nSunday tours begin at 1:00 PM\, rain or shine.
