DESCRIPTION:This tour focuses exclusively on women for whom motherhood was central to their identities\, their lives\, and sometimes their deaths. Women celebrated on this tour may have been biological mothers\, such as Lucy Bell\, who devoted her life to fighting for her family’s freedom from slavery\, and expectant mother Sarah Reed\,  who died reportedly trying to save her stepchildren during the explosion of the steamship Wawaset.  Others are metaphorical\, like Mother of Gay Rights Barbara Gittings\, or whimsical\, like Flora Darling\, founder of “Daughters of” organizations\, such as the DAR.  Walk among two centuries of motherhood at Congressional as we honor the public and private roles of some of our female residents. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is open to dogs on Sundays. Regardless of race\, religion\, creed\, or political belief\, Washington D.C. remains a cosmopolitan city\, a quintessential reflection of American diversity. \nMany groups have contributed to building community and culture in Washington D.C.\, including Jewish Americans. Their contributions are as rich and varied as Jewishness itself\, reflecting the centrality of Jewish narratives in the nation’s capital. They worked on Capitol Hill in the halls of Congress\, fighting for justice. They founded community organizations\, helping build the ties that bind Washingtonians. They established businesses\, pursuing the American dream. They worked in the arts and humanities\, helping individuals explore the depths of human expression. \nThese are just some of the Jewish narratives preserved forever at Historic Congressional Cemetery. Dozens of Jews are interred at Congressional and their stories remain as a testament to the dedication of Jewish Americans to live and thrive in D.C. With the global rise of antisemitism\, it is important for all individuals to contemplate the influence of Jewish Americans on Washington history. \nWe invite you to discover Jewish American history and heritage on Sunday\, May 18th at 1:00 PM. Seeking equal rights and protections from discrimination\, gay rights advocacy took on many forms of resistance\, including a symbol seen on graves at Congressional Cemetery\, the Pink Triangle. \nTo explore LGBTQ+ history and gay legacy in the nation’s capital\, we hope that you will join us for a very special WorldPride edition of the Cemetery Speaker Series with LGBTQ+ historian Dr. Jake Desai-Newsome. \nHe will explore the inspiring history of how generations of LGBTQ+ activists transformed the pink triangle from a Nazi concentration camp badge into a powerful call to action for LGBTQ+ pride\, justice\, and community. Drawing from unexplored archival sources and exclusive interviews\, Dr. Desai-Newsome will showcase the ways activists in the US and beyond used the pink triangle – and the history it represented – to fight against injustice in the present. Washington DC played a unique role in bringing together networks of activists and scholars in the LGBTQ+ rights movement. You’ll hear the stories and see the final resting place of some of the most influential advocates for LGBTQ+ equality in American history \n \nAfter the presentation\, Interim Executive Director A.J. Orlikoff will lead a thematic evening LGBTQ+ walking tour of the historic grounds. All proceeds go to benefit our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. DESCRIPTION:Find out the true stories of the women who served as nurses in war – their yearning to help\, to change life\, to improve the situation of their sons\, fathers\, and uncles in the field of battle and how with courage and dedication they helped improve the lives of so many. On this tour we will look into the lives of these women and how they contributed to the suffragist movement. \n\nThe docent for this special topic tour is Melanie La Force\, an award -winning professional tourist guide in Washington\, DC. She brings a passion for the human side of history to the artistry of storytelling. She earned a BA in French language and teaching at the University of Illinois\, Champaign-Urbana. She studied Roman History at the Sorbonne in Paris and her love of art and archeology grew. With a Masters Degree in public policy from George Washington University she continued a dedicated career in the federal government. While working internationally for the EPA she saw how much she loved history and travel and earned a Masters in Curriculum Design and then turned to tourist guiding in DC. She developed her own Clara Barton tour and presented it with DC Walking Town and now is offering tours in the DC area. Courtesy of New England Historical Society \nSign up here!\nIn his capacities as general\, president\, enslaver\, and farmer\, George Washington received support from many individuals who — compared to the nation’s first chief executive — are less remembered. One such person is Tobias Lear\, who in 1784 was recommended by General Benjamin Lincoln to serve as Washington’s executive secretary. Over the next 15 years\, Lear worked for Washington as an indispensable employee and became\, literally\, part of the Washington family. His relationship with Washington ended only with the general’s death in 1799\, which Lear witnessed and recorded in detail. Lear’s own demise in 1816 was followed by his burial in Historic Congressional Cemetery. \nFor this entry of the 2025 Speaker Series\, HCC is thrilled to welcome one of the country’s most sought-out presidential historians\, Dr. Lindsay M. Chervinsky\, to discuss Lear’s life and connection to George Washington. Dr. Chervinsky currently serves as the Executive Director of the George Washington Presidential Library. She is the author of the award-winning books\, The Cabinet: George Washington and the Creation of an American Institution and Making the Presidency: John Adams and the Precedents That Forged the Republic\, and co-editor of Mourning the Presidents: Loss and Legacy in American Culture. DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand! This is your chance to experience our one of a kind Lincoln Assassination Tour if you missed the Cemetery Speaker Series earlier this year. \nOn April 14\, 1865\, President Abraham Lincoln was shot in the head while watching a play at Ford’s Theatre. The assassin\, John Wilkes Booth\, jumped to the stage floor and fled. The next day\, April 15\, President Lincoln died as a result of his wounds. With Booth’s escape\, the largest manhunt in American history ensued as law enforcement and military searched for the assassin. Aided by fellow conspirators such as David Herold\, Booth evaded authorities until Army soldiers located Booth at a local farm. Surrounded\, Booth was shot and killed in that fateful confrontation. Eventually\, 8 other conspirators\, including Herold\, were implicated in the conspiracy and subsequently executed after a trial by military tribunal. \n \nThe story of the 16th President’s assassination is a well known one. Hundreds of books\, thousands of articles\, and dozens of special exhibits are just some of the ways this story has been told. In To Die For\, Rosie collects 40 recipes she’s found across the globe\, carved into headstones or associated with a grave that has a story to share. Each recipe is accompanied by an interview with the remaining family\, plus photography of the food\, the gravestone\, and any memorabilia the family wanted to share. \nRosie Grant baked snickerdoodles based off of the recipe listed on the tombstone of Annabell R. Gunderson in Willits\, California. \nRosie Grant is the creator behind @GhostlyArchive on TikTok and Instagram\, where she researches and re-creates recipes found on gravestones. She works at the Center for the Study of Women at UCLA and is currently working on a food studies certificate at the UCLA Extension School. She received her Masters in Library Science (MLIS) at the University of Maryland with a concentration in digital archives in 2022\, where she got to combine her love of food writing\, cemeteries\, and archival work. The gravestone recipe project first began during her digital archives internship at Congressional Cemetery in Washington\, DC. \nSpeaker Series: Gravestone Recipes with Rosie Grant will include a presentation about Rosie’s tasty travels\, followed by a book signing. The event will conclude with a tour of unique\, personalized gravestones throughout Congressional Cemetery. \nThere are two ticket options for this event: \n1) Regular admission costs $10 \n2) Admission PLUS a copy of Rosie Grant’s To Die For book costs $36. The books will be provided through a partnership with Bold Fork Books. \nBooks will be available to purchase in the Chapel on the day of the event\, as well. \nSpace is limited so be sure to reserve your spot today! DESCRIPTION:Women’s contributions during the American Civil War were substantial. Thousands on both sides served as nurses\, while others manufactured ammunition. Some even took up arms in the battle between North and South.\n\nHistoric Congressional Cemetery is the final resting place of numerous women who had active roles in the deadliest American war. This Women’s History Month\, Congressional is partnering with the Clara Barton Missing Soldiers Office Museum to highlight some of these interred residents.
