SUMMARY:Mostly Mothers: The Eternal Maternal Guided Tour
DESCRIPTION:This tour focuses exclusively on women for whom motherhood was central to their identities\, their lives\, and sometimes their deaths. Women celebrated on this tour may have been biological mothers\, such as Lucy Bell\, who devoted her life to fighting for her family’s freedom from slavery\, and expectant mother Sarah Reed\,  who died reportedly trying to save her stepchildren during the explosion of the steamship Wawaset.  Others are metaphorical\, like Mother of Gay Rights Barbara Gittings\, or whimsical\, like Flora Darling\, founder of “Daughters of” organizations\, such as the DAR.  Walk among two centuries of motherhood at Congressional as we honor the public and private roles of some of our female residents. \nPlease come prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe Cemetery is open to dogs on Sundays. Please be aware of that off-leash dogs will be on the grounds at the time of the tour. \nReservations are required and a tour reservation is a $10 donation. \nSunday tours begin at 1:00 PM\, rain or shine. Visitors may meet docents at the front gate of the cemetery located at the corner of E St. and Potomac Ave. \nYou May Purchase Tickets Here!\nhttps://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/congressionalcemetery/mostly-mothers-the-eternal-maternal-at-congressional-cemetery-2

SUMMARY:Jewish Americans Guided Docent Tour
DESCRIPTION:Washington\, D.C. has always been a place of diversity. Ever since the city’s founding in 1790\, thousands of different people have lived\, worked\, and died alongside each other. And while Washingtonians have not always lived harmoniously with each other\, they have contributed to create a community. Regardless of race\, religion\, creed\, or political belief\, Washington D.C. remains a cosmopolitan city\, a quintessential reflection of American diversity. \nMany groups have contributed to building community and culture in Washington D.C.\, including Jewish Americans. Their contributions are as rich and varied as Jewishness itself\, reflecting the centrality of Jewish narratives in the nation’s capital. They worked on Capitol Hill in the halls of Congress\, fighting for justice. They founded community organizations\, helping build the ties that bind Washingtonians. They established businesses\, pursuing the American dream. They worked in the arts and humanities\, helping individuals explore the depths of human expression. \nThese are just some of the Jewish narratives preserved forever at Historic Congressional Cemetery. Dozens of Jews are interred at Congressional and their stories remain as a testament to the dedication of Jewish Americans to live and thrive in D.C. With the global rise of antisemitism\, it is important for all individuals to contemplate the influence of Jewish Americans on Washington history. \nWe invite you to discover Jewish American history and heritage on Sunday\, May 18th at 1:00 PM. Docent Charles Walton will lead a thematic tour of Jewish American gravesites and monuments. \nTickets are only $10 and all proceeds go to benefitting our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. Space is limited so be sure to reserve your spot today! The tour is approximately 60 to 90 minutes in length. Please come prepared with comfortable clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe event is rain or shine. Smoking is prohibited. Please note that the cemetery is open to off leash dog walking at the time of the tour. \nYou may reserve your tickets below.

SUMMARY:Cemetery Speaker Series: The Pink Triangle and the Fight for LGBTQ+ Rights in the U.S.
DESCRIPTION:Throughout history\, Americans have fought for freedom. And in the mid 20th century\, Gay Americans fought for and advanced the LGBTQ+ liberation movement. Seeking equal rights and protections from discrimination\, gay rights advocacy took on many forms of resistance\, including a symbol seen on graves at Congressional Cemetery\, the Pink Triangle. \nTo explore LGBTQ+ history and gay legacy in the nation’s capital\, we hope that you will join us for a very special WorldPride edition of the Cemetery Speaker Series with LGBTQ+ historian Dr. Jake Desai-Newsome. \nHe will explore the inspiring history of how generations of LGBTQ+ activists transformed the pink triangle from a Nazi concentration camp badge into a powerful call to action for LGBTQ+ pride\, justice\, and community. Drawing from unexplored archival sources and exclusive interviews\, Dr. Desai-Newsome will showcase the ways activists in the US and beyond used the pink triangle – and the history it represented – to fight against injustice in the present. Washington DC played a unique role in bringing together networks of activists and scholars in the LGBTQ+ rights movement. You’ll hear the stories and see the final resting place of some of the most influential advocates for LGBTQ+ equality in American history \n \nAfter the presentation\, Interim Executive Director A.J. Orlikoff will lead a thematic evening LGBTQ+ walking tour of the historic grounds. All proceeds go to benefit our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. Space is limited so be sure to reserve your spot today! Keynote remarks will take place inside the Chapel and the walking tour will take place on the grounds. The tour is approximately 45 minutes in length. Please come prepared with comfortable clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths.  We will be serving alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages from our pop-up bar. \nThe event is rain or shine. Smoking is prohibited and dogs are not allowed to attend the event unless they are a service animal. All proceeds from the event directly benefit our non-profit mission. \nYou may register below. \n\n\n \n
