SUMMARY:Tombs and Tomes Book Club September (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:In 1885 Jane and Leland Stanford cofounded a university to honor their recently deceased young son. After her husband’s death in 1893\, Jane Stanford\, a devoted spiritualist who expected the university to inculcate her values\, steered Stanford into eccentricity and public controversy for more than a decade. In 1905 she was murdered in Hawaii\, a victim\, according to the Honolulu coroner’s jury\, of strychnine poisoning. With her vast fortune the university’s lifeline\, the Stanford president and his allies quickly sought to foreclose challenges to her bequests by constructing a story of death by natural causes. The cover-up gained traction in the murky labyrinths of power\, wealth\, and corruption of Gilded Age San Francisco. The murderer walked… \nStill interested? RSVP Here!

SUMMARY:Tombs and Tomes Book Club July (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:On January 28\, 1742\, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men\, barely alive\, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager\, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans\,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia. The men\, after being marooned for months and facing starvation\, built the flimsy craft and sailed for more than a hundred days\, traversing nearly 3\,000 miles of storm-wracked seas. They were greeted as heroes. \nBut then . . . six months later\, another\, even more decrepit craft landed on the coast of Chile. This boat contained just three castaways\, and they told a very different story. The thirty sailors who landed in Brazil were not heroes – they were mutineers. The first group responded with countercharges of their own\, of a tyrannical and murderous senior officer and his henchmen. It became clear that while stranded on the island the crew had fallen into anarchy\, with warring factions fighting for dominion over the barren wilderness. As accusations of treachery and murder flew\, the Admiralty convened a court martial to determine who was telling the truth. The stakes were life-and-death–for whomever the court found guilty could hang… \n

SUMMARY:Tombs and Tomes Book Club May (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:A tree that sheds poison daggers; a glistening red seed that stops the heart; a shrub that causes paralysis; a vine that strangles; and a leaf that triggered a war. In Wicked Plants \, Stewart takes on over two hundred of Mother Nature’s most appalling creations. It’s an A to Z of plants that kill\, maim\, intoxicate\, and otherwise offend. You’ll learn which plants to avoid (like exploding shrubs)\, which plants make themselves exceedingly unwelcome (like the vine that ate the South)\, and which ones have been killing for centuries (like the weed that killed Abraham Lincoln’s mother). \nMenacing botanical illustrations and splendidly ghastly drawings create a fascinating portrait of the evildoers that may be lurking in your own backyard. Drawing on history\, medicine\, science\, and legend\, this compendium of bloodcurdling botany will entertain\, alarm\, and enlighten even the most intrepid gardeners and nature lovers… \nStill interested? SUMMARY:Tombs and Tomes Book Club March (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Two teens. Two diaries. Two social panics. One incredible fraud. \nIn 1971\, Go Ask Alice reinvented the young adult genre with a blistering portrayal of sex\, psychosis\, and teenage self-destruction. The supposed diary of a middle-class addict\, Go Ask Alice terrified adults and cemented LSD’s fearsome reputation\, fueling support for the War on Drugs. Five million copies later\, Go Ask Alice remains a divisive bestseller\, outraging censors and earning new fans\, all of them drawn by the book’s mythic premise: A Real Diary\, by Anonymous. \nBut Alice was only the beginning. \nIn 1979\, another diary rattled the culture\, setting the stage for a national meltdown. The posthumous memoir of an alleged teenage Satanist\, Jay’s Journal merged with a frightening new crisis—adolescent suicide—to create a literal witch hunt\, shattering countless lives and poisoning whole communities. \nIn reality\, Go Ask Alice and Jay’s Journal came from the same dark place: Beatrice Sparks\, a serial con artist who betrayed a grieving family\, stole a dead boy’s memory\, and lied her way to the National Book Awards. \nUnmask Alice: LSD\, Satanic Panic\, and the Imposter Behind the World’s Most Notorious Diaries is a true story of contagious deception. It stretches from Hollywood to Quantico\, and passes through a tiny patch of Utah nicknamed “the fraud capital of America.” It’s the story of a doomed romance and a vengeful celebrity. Of a lazy press and a public mob. Of two suicidal teenagers\, and their exploitation by a literary vampire. \nUnmask Alice . . . where truth is stranger than nonfiction.

SUMMARY:Tombs and Tomes Book Club January (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Discover the science of forensics through Agatha Christie’s novels \nAgatha Christie is the bestselling novelist of all time\, and nearly every story she ever wrote involves one―or\, more commonly\, several―dead bodies. And the cause of death\, the motives behind violent crimes\, the clues that inevitably are left behind\, and the people who put the pieces together to solve the mystery invite the reader to analyze the evidence and race to find the answer before the detective does. Nearly every step of the way\, Christie outlines the nuts and bolts of early 20th-century crime detection\, relying on physical evidence to tell the real story behind the facades humans erect to escape detection. \nChristie wouldn’t have talked of “forensics” as it is understood today―most of her work predates the modern developments of forensics science―but in each tale she harnesses the power of human observation\, ingenuity\, and scientific developments of the era. A fascinating\, science-based deep dive\, The Science of Murder examines the use of fingerprints\, firearms\, handwriting\, blood spatter analysis\, toxicology\, and more in Christie’s beloved works. \nStill interested? SUMMARY:Tombs and Tomes Book Club November (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Science is a force for good in the world—at least usually. But sometimes\, when obsession gets the better of scientists\, they twist a noble pursuit into something sinister. Under this spell\, knowledge isn’t everything\, it’s the only thing—no matter the cost. Bestselling author Sam Kean tells the true story of what happens when unfettered ambition pushes otherwise rational men and women to cross the line in the name of science\, trampling ethical boundaries and often committing crimes in the process. \nThe Icepick Surgeon masterfully guides the reader across two thousand years of history\, beginning with Cleopatra’s dark deeds in ancient Egypt. The book reveals the origins of much of modern science in the transatlantic slave trade of the 1700s\, as well as Thomas Edison’s mercenary support of the electric chair and the warped logic of the spies who infiltrated the Manhattan Project. But the sins of science aren’t all safely buried in the past. Many of them\, Kean reminds us\, still affect us today. \nStill interested? Sign up here!

SUMMARY:Tombs and Tomes Book Club September (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:“Utterly fascinating.” —Bill Bryson A groundbreaking exploration of the science of why and how we age and die—from Nobel Prize-winning molecular biologist Venki Ramakrishnan. The knowledge of death is so terrifying that we live most of our lives in denial of it. Throughout human history—from the immortal afterlife of Judeo-Christian thought to the cycle of reincarnation posited by many Eastern religions—we have developed beliefs that allow us to avoid recognizing its finality. One of the most difficult moments of childhood must be when each of us first realizes that not only we but all our loved ones will die—and there is nothing we can do about it. Or at least\, there hasn’t been. Today\, we are living through a revolution in biology. Giant strides are being made in understanding why we age—and why some species live longer than others. SUMMARY:Tombs and Tomes Book Club September (In Person)
Could we eventually cheat disease and death and live for a very long time\, possibly many times our current lifespan? \nStill interested? Sign up here!

DESCRIPTION:Erik Larson’s gifts as a storyteller are magnificently displayed in this rich narrative of the master builder\, the killer\, and the great fair that obsessed them both. \nTwo men\, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work\, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham\, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures\, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington\, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. All programs are in the chapel and seating is available on a first come\, first served basis.  See below for more information! \n11:30 AM- 12:30 PM\, Keynote Presentation – Who Tells Your Story?: Re-thinking American History\n \nUntil recently\, history has been taught from the limited perspective of a few prominent individuals. These mostly white\, male narratives obscure how real social change occurs for most people in society. Yet including these overlooked narratives makes the process of writing history far more challenging. In our first program of the Tombs and Tomes book festival\, Congressional Cemetery is proud to host award winning author Rebecca Boggs Roberts to contribute her perspective and insight on addressing these challenges. \nRebecca Roberts – About our Speaker:\nRebecca Boggs Roberts is an award-winning writer and educator. Previous jobs include journalist\, tour guide\, forensic anthropologist\, political consultant\, jazz singer\, & radio talk show host. Now Deputy Director of events at the Library of Congress\, she lives in DC with her husband\, three sons\, and a long-eared hound. \n\n  \n1:00 PM- 2:00 PM\, Panel Discussion – Writing the Dead: Perspectives From Cemetery Authors\nMost media around cemeteries typically strays into the realm of fiction. Yet these often settings of spooky books and movies can overlook the true beauty\, history\, and even meaning of cemeteries\, graveyards\, and other places of rest.  But how to do it? How do you write about a cemetery? Who do you write about? What images do you include? Are there any unique challenges? Is it irreverent? To answer these questions and more\, we invite you to join us for a panel discussion featuring cemetery authors and photographers! \nGreg Melville\, Kurt Deion\, Andrew Garn \nAbout our Panelists:\nGreg Melville\, Kurt Deion\, and Andrew Garn have all authored or contributed to books on cemeteries. We encourage you to learn more about their work by clicking the links above! \n2:30 PM-3:30 PM – Poetry Open Mic\nBooks aren’t the only form of the written word that we adore. We dig poems and even more\, we LOVE poets\, including you. Are you a massive Edgar Allen Poe fan? Or perhaps you a more of a Walt Whitman person? Or maybe you moon (or day) light as poet yourself? Whether you want to share a poem you or someone else wrote\, we invite you to join us for an Open Mic poetry session. Get inspired\, don’t be shy\, and join us in celebrating the written word! \nOur Tombs and Tomes Poetry Open Mic Prompt: Life\, Death\, and Our Relationship with the Written Word.  \nOpen to all \n  \n \n  \nWhile admission is free and reservations are not required\, we would appreciate if you RSVPed here so we have a sense of how many attendees to expect. Thanks!

SUMMARY:Tombs and Tomes Book Club March (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Enter a grave new world of fascination and delight as award-winning writer Peter Ross uncovers the stories and glories of graveyards. Who are London’s outcast dead and why is David Bowie their guardian angel? What is the remarkable truth about Phoebe Hessel\, who disguised herself as a man to fight alongside her sweetheart\, and went on to live in the reigns of five monarchs? Why is a Bristol cemetery the perfect wedding venue for goths? \nAll of these sorrowful mysteries – and many more – are answered in A Tomb With A View\, a book for anyone who has ever wandered through a field of crooked headstones and wondered about the lives and deaths of those who lie beneath. \nSo push open the rusting gate\, push back the ivy\, and take a look inside… \nStill interested? SUMMARY:Tombs and Tomes Book Club January (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:The Angel Makers is a true-crime story like no other–a 1920s midwife who may have been the century’s most prolific killer leading a murder ring of women responsible for the deaths of at least 160 men. \nThe horror occurred in a rustic farming enclave in modern-day Hungary. DESCRIPTION:For the virtual meeting\, we ask that you include a sense of macabre fun! This very special meeting will commemorate Tombs and Tomes’ 10th birthday. \nBeloved\, best-selling science writer Mary Roach’s “acutely entertaining\, morbidly fascinating” (Susan Adams\, Forbes) classic\, now with a new epilogue. \nFor two thousand years\, cadavers—some willingly\, some unwittingly—have been involved in science’s boldest strides and weirdest undertakings. They’ve tested France’s first guillotines\, ridden the NASA Space Shuttle\, been crucified in a Parisian laboratory to test the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin\, and helped solve the mystery of TWA Flight 800. For every new surgical procedure\, from heart transplants to gender confirmation surgery\, cadavers have helped make history in their quiet way. “Delightful—though never disrespectful” (Les Simpson\, Time Out New York)\, Stiff investigates the strange lives of our bodies postmortem and answers the question: What should we do after we die? \nStill interested?
