SUMMARY:Soul Strolls: Tragic Lives & Demise
DESCRIPTION:Washington\, DC\, like any American setting\, is no stranger to tragedy. It textured the lives of the millions of people who have called the region home. Their stories reflect our story as a nation\, helping us understand the past to inform our future. In this macabre mirror\, we can catch glimpses of tragic twists of fate endured by them. SUMMARY:Soul Strolls: Scandal & Slander
DESCRIPTION:Few American cities embody scandal quite like Washington\, D.C. As the heart of political power and prestige throughout U.S. history\, Washington has been the stage for some of the nation’s most infamous scandals. Where power thrives\, controversy follows\, and the truth remains elusive. Slander\, libel\, and gossip have all shaped and skewed the historical record\, making it challenging to separate fact from fiction. Many of the people at the center of these scandals—or who became infamous themselves—lived\, worked\, and died in the nation’s capital. But who were these individuals? What are their stories? \nThis fall\, we invite you to uncover tales of scandal from the residents of Congressional Cemetery—a macabre glimpse into D.C.’s notorious past. Discover how their legacies endure in our collective memory. Encounter those shrouded in the past\, brought vividly to life by our talented actors\, and witness them as they tell their stories. Join us for Soul Strolls 2024: Scandal and Slander. \nOur annual twilight tours explore the stories of individuals buried here through a guided lantern lit tour of the grounds with costumed interpreters.
Experience the history of this hallowed ground exactly the way it should be experienced in October – in twilight and darkness\, immersed in vignettes of the lives of our interred residents. \nDetails: \nSoul Strolls take place over four nights\, October 18-19 and October 25-26. Gates open a half hour prior to the first tour start time. We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes prior to your tour start time. SUMMARY:Soul Strolls: Grave Robbing and Resurrection
DESCRIPTION:  \nSECOND WAVE TICKETS AVAILABLE OCTOBER 10th at 5:00 PM\nWashington\, D.C. is a city of light and shadow. Beneath the shining edifices of marble that dot the landscape lies the story of dark deeds from decades past. Grave robbing\, body snatching\, and resurrection plagued the nation’s capital over a hundred years ago. The dead were not safe—and the living were complicit. \nThis macabre drama played out in the burial grounds of America: an unsettling collision of scientific inquiry\, unsuspecting victims\, and blasphemous desecration. \nThis fall\, we invite you to experience another dark chapter of our common history—a chilling glimpse into D.C.’s past. Discover the stories of our interred residents\, victims and perpetrators alike\, brought to life by our talented actors. Encounter them and uncover their long-buried secrets. Reckon with their legacies and learn about the American past. Join us for Soul Strolls 2025: Grave Robbing and Resurrection. \nOur annual twilight tours explore the stories of individuals buried here through a guided lantern lit tour of the grounds with costumed interpreters. Experience the history of this hallowed ground exactly the way it should be experienced in October – in twilight and darkness\, immersed in vignettes of the lives of our interred residents. \nDetails: \nSoul Strolls take place over 6 nights\, October 17-18\, October 24-25\, and October 31-November 1. SUMMARY:Soul Strolls: Becoming America
DESCRIPTION:The United States was founded upon powerful ideals: freedom\, equality\, liberty\, and representative government. 250 years ago\, the Declaration of Independence boldly declared the birth of a new age of freedom\, asserting that “All men are created equal.”\nYet\, the United States failed to be what it imagined itself to be. Enslavement persisted. Women were denied political and legal equality. Native nations were displaced and brutalized. People without wealth\, status\, or social power were routinely excluded from the country’s promises. \nOver time\, America’s true form emerged and it was shaped by Americans who refused to accept these inequities. Across generations\, activists\, agitators\, freedom seekers\, reformers\, and ordinary individuals pushed the nation closer to the ideals it claimed to represent. \nIn recognition and celebration of America’s 250th anniversary and brought to life by Congressional Cemetery’s interred residents\, Soul Strolls: Becoming America explores this contested space between ideals and reality. Through the stories of those who came before\, visitors will consider not only the values of America’s founding\, but how generations of people have embodied what America truly is. \nOur annual lantern-lit twilight tours bring the cemetery’s history to life through immersive performances by costumed interpreters. Journey through the grounds after dark\, encounter Congressional Cemetery’s interred residents\, and discover the lives and legacies that helped shape the nation. \nGuests are encouraged to arrive early before their scheduled tour to enjoy live music\, refreshments\, and the atmosphere of an October evening in the cemetery. We plan to have a food truck available each evening\, along with drinks and other refreshments for purchase. \nAttendee costumes are welcomed and encouraged! \n\nTickets available here!\nDetails:\nSoul Strolls take place over 6 nights\, October 16-17\, October 23-24\, and October 30-31.
