SUMMARY:Dead Man's Run 2026
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, October 10 at 5:00 PM for Congressional Cemetery’s annual fall 5K fundraiser. This death-defying race begins inside the cemetery before continuing onto the Anacostia Trail for a spooky evening run filled with music\, costumes\, and frightful fun. \nWhether you’re racing for a personal best\, walking with friends\, or simply trying to stay ahead of your grave\, Dead Man’s Run is one of the region’s most unique fall 5Ks. Costumes are encouraged\, with prizes awarded for best individual costume and best team costume. Form a team\, get creative with your team name\, and compete for prizes recognizing top overall finishers\, age-group winners\, and best team time. \nRegister by August 1 to take advantage of early bird pricing. This year\, all participants who register by September 20 will receive a complimentary race shirt. Registrants after September 20 will receive a shirt while supplies last. \nAll proceeds from Dead Man’s Run support Historic Congressional Cemetery\, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of this National Historic Landmark. \nFounded in 1807\, Historic Congressional Cemetery is a 35-acre active burial ground in Washington\, D.C.\, with more than 70\,000 interments. The cemetery is the final resting place of many notable Americans\, including members of Congress\, public servants\, veterans\, artists\, activists\, and Washingtonians from all walks of life. Today\, Congressional Cemetery remains both a sacred historic landscape and a vibrant community space\, sustained through public programs\, preservation efforts\, and the support of those who visit\, run\, walk\, and gather here. \nStart Time: The 5K begins at 5:00 pm. \nCost (Includes T-shirt if ordered before September 20th): \nEarly Bird [BEFORE August 2nd]: $30 \nStandard: $40 \nNot only is this a fun race\, but it comes with the good feeling you get when supporting a non-profit! \nWe are unable to offer refunds or race transfers. Our races are rain or shine\, and there is no rain date for the race. \nThe Course:\nOur 5K course is flat\, fast\, and USATF certified. Start and finish are within the cemetery\, and the course goes out on the adjoining Anacostia Trail for a quick out and back. Water is available at the start/finish line and at a water stop around the halfway point of the 5k course. \nAwards:\nPrizes will be rewarded for the top finishers\, including the team with the best collective time! Water and snacks are provided to all race participants. Additional prizes are awarded for the winners of the costume contest. \nDogs:\nWe do allow strollers and dogs on this course. However\, please keep in mind that all those with dogs and strollers will be asked to start at the back of the group to minimize confusion. Please no retractable leashes! \nChildren’s Race:\nWe are also offering a children’s race prior to the start of the 5k. Participation in the children’s run is free for any child who has a parent\, guardian\, or friend registered for the 5K. Children may still participate\, if no runners are registered\, for a $5 fee. Registration for the children’s race is in our chapel the day of the race and a parent or guardian must sign a waiver. \nRegistration:\nRegistration and packet pickup opens at 9:00 AM on October 9th at the Gatehouse back porch and goes until 5:00 PM. On October 10 (race day) it opens 3:00 PM in the Chapel. \nAwards: \nPrizes will be rewarded for the top individual performers overall and for age groups. SUMMARY:Soul Strolls: Becoming America
DESCRIPTION:The United States was founded upon powerful ideals: freedom\, equality\, liberty\, and representative government. 250 years ago\, the Declaration of Independence boldly declared the birth of a new age of freedom\, asserting that “All men are created equal.”\nYet\, the United States failed to be what it imagined itself to be. Enslavement persisted. Women were denied political and legal equality. Native nations were displaced and brutalized. People without wealth\, status\, or social power were routinely excluded from the country’s promises. \nOver time\, America’s true form emerged and it was shaped by Americans who refused to accept these inequities. Across generations\, activists\, agitators\, freedom seekers\, reformers\, and ordinary individuals pushed the nation closer to the ideals it claimed to represent. \nIn recognition and celebration of America’s 250th anniversary and brought to life by Congressional Cemetery’s interred residents\, Soul Strolls: Becoming America explores this contested space between ideals and reality. Through the stories of those who came before\, visitors will consider not only the values of America’s founding\, but how generations of people have embodied what America truly is. \nOur annual lantern-lit twilight tours bring the cemetery’s history to life through immersive performances by costumed interpreters. Journey through the grounds after dark\, encounter Congressional Cemetery’s interred residents\, and discover the lives and legacies that helped shape the nation. \nGuests are encouraged to arrive early before their scheduled tour to enjoy live music\, refreshments\, and the atmosphere of an October evening in the cemetery. We plan to have a food truck available each evening\, along with drinks and other refreshments for purchase. \nAttendee costumes are welcomed and encouraged! \n\nTickets available here!\nDetails:\nSoul Strolls take place over 6 nights\, October 16-17\, October 23-24\, and October 30-31. Hour-long tours depart every 10 minutes. The major change to Soul Strolls 2026 is our new tour queue system. When purchasing your ticket\, you will select a tour queue time. The time on your ticket is the time by which you must be checked in and standing in the tour queue. We recommend arriving at least 30 minutes prior to your tour queue time to enjoy live music\, thematic cocktails\, and the ambiance of an evening in the cemetery. Visit our ticketing page for detailed information on our new ticket system\, tours\, and more. Costumes are encouraged and welcomed from attendees! \nStandard Tour Experience \nStandard Soul Strolls tickets include: \n\nA guided lantern-lit tour through Congressional Cemetery\nImmersive theatrical performances by costumed interpreters\nAccess to the event grounds before and after the tour\nLive music and thematic décor\nThe opportunity to purchase food\, drinks\, refreshments\, and merchandise\n\nVIP Tour Experience \nEnjoy Soul Strolls with a smaller group and a few special additions. VIP tickets include: \n\nA smaller\, more intimate tour group\nA Soul Strolls swag bag\nOne complimentary drink ticket\nAn exclusive additional performance available only to VIP guests\nEverything included with a standard Soul Strolls ticket\n\nMobility-Accessible Tour \nFor the first time\, Soul Strolls will offer a specially designed Mobility-Accessible Tour option. \nThis tour will: \n\nFollow a shorter route\nRemain on paved paths\nAvoid the grassy and uneven portions of the standard route\nProvide a more wheelchair-friendly Soul Strolls experience\n\n \nASL-Interpreted Tours \nSelect Soul Strolls tours will include tours with a complimentary American Sign Language interpreter. \nAn ASL interpreter will accompany the group throughout the tour and interpret the guide’s remarks and character performances. Guests requiring interpretation should purchase one of the specifically designated ASL Tour tickets. \nFamily-Friendly Tours \nSelect tours will be specially adapted for families and younger audiences. \nThese performances will retain the evening’s history and theatrical atmosphere while moderating some of the production’s more intense language and descriptions. Family-friendly tours should be considered approximately PG-rated. \nParents and guardians should still review the content advisory when deciding whether the program is appropriate for their children. Soul Strolls is a historical theatrical experience\, not a haunted attraction\, but it discusses mature events from American history. Visit our ticketing page for more information about themes and content. \nFood and Refreshments\nWe plan to have a food truck available each evening of Soul Strolls. Drinks and additional refreshments will also be available for purchase. \nFood-truck participation and menu offerings may vary by evening and are subject to change. Guests should plan to arrive approximately 30 minutes before their estimated tour time if they would like to purchase food or enjoy the event grounds before joining the tour queue. \nSoul Strolls is a rain-or-shine event \nSupporting Congressional Cemetery\nSoul Strolls may be a spirited evening in the cemetery\, but it is also one of Congressional Cemetery’s most important annual fundraising programs. \nCongressional Cemetery is operated by a nonprofit organization\, the Association for the Preservation of Historic Congressional Cemetery. Proceeds from Soul Strolls support our mission\, programs\, preservation work\, and stewardship of this extraordinary historic landscape. \nQuestions about Soul Strolls? Please email staff@congressionalcemetery.org. \nTickets available here!\n

The time on your ticket is the time by which you must be checked in and standing in the tour queue. SUMMARY:Wreaths Across America Wreath Laying
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nAt Congressional\, we remember our veterans. Over 1700 veterans from almost every major American armed conflict are interred in the historic grounds of Congressional Cemetery. And while they are no longer here\, their memories live on. To help honor and remember\, we invite you to join Congressional Cemetery and our community partners for the annual Wreaths Across America Wreath Laying Ceremony and event. \nThe ceremony will begin at 11:00 AM at Congressional Cemetery. Upon arrival\, attendees are directed to the ceremony area. At the conclusion of the ceremony (around 11:30 AM)\, attendees and volunteers will assist with the placing of wreaths at veteran graves. Attending the ceremony is free but we ask that you please RSVP using the link below. In addition\, chairs are provided for the ceremony and are available on a first come\, first served basis. \nPlease note that this an outdoor event with no rain date. We advise dressing for the elements. We also recommend wearing appropriate footwear\, as the ground is uneven across the cemetery. Due to our status as a National Historic Landmark\, we are unable to be ADA compliant. \nWreaths Across America is a US-based Non-Profit Organization started in 2007 by Wreath Producer Morrill Worcester. Every year\, in partnership with shipping companies\, truckers\, living veterans\, cemetery staff\, and all number of volunteers\, Wreaths Across America place wreaths on the graves of veterans who have passed to “Remember\, Honor\, and Teach” about the memory of their lives and service. \nIf you are interested in attending the ceremony and potentially placing a wreath\, please RSVP here.\nIf you are interested in donating a wreath for the ceremony\, please see our page HERE.\nLearn more about Wreaths Across America at their website.
