SUMMARY:Prison Terminal: The Last Days of Private Jack Hall
DESCRIPTION:Prison Terminal\, the Oscar-nominated documentary\, explores the end of life of an incarcerated man cared for by fellow incarcerated men. \n\n\n\nWhat is it like to die in prison? With an aging population within and outside prisons\, more attention is paid to end-of-life care. While hospices and families focus on comfort care\, dignity\, and legacy\, these are not always available for incarcerated people. \nThe setting for this gathering is particularly meaningful because Congressional Cemetery and the DC Jail share a wall\, reminding us that issues of mortality and humanity exist side by side. \nThis free screening of Prison Terminal\, the Oscar-nominated documentary short directed by Edgar Barens\, explores the end of life faced by individuals whose decisions and activities are determined by prison authorities. The filmmaker of Prison Terminal spent six months with incarcerated men who were aging and dying\, prison staff\, and incarcerated peer caregivers. The documentary focuses on one incarcerated man\, Jack Hall\, a U.S. war veteran convicted of murder\, and the incarcerated men who cared for him as he declined and died. \nThe film’s director\, Edgar Barens\, and representatives of the Humane Prison Hospice Project\, will join us for a panel discussion following the screening\, facilitated by DC Death Collective members. \nCome view the film and join us to discuss the growth of programs in U.S. prisons that expand dignified\, compassionate care for incarcerated people as they age and die. We hope to encourage community awareness and action around these topics. \n“The commitment of the inmate hospice volunteers – and the competence and reverence with which they provide care – shows that dying people’s comfort and dignity can be preserved even in the least desirable situations. Our society could learn a lot from the example they set. A triumph of documentary filmmaking!” Ira Byock\, MD\, palliative care physician and author of Dying Well and The Best Care Possible \nSeats are limited in our chapel building: free pre-registration is required. \nRegister Here\nPartners:\n\nDC Death Collective\nHumane Prison Hospice Project\nHistoric Congressional Cemetery\n\nReach the organizers: thedcdeathcollective@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Cemetery Speaker Series: The People Behind the People's House\, with Dr. Matthew Goetz
DESCRIPTION:SIGN UP HERE!\nWhite House Residence Staff. Photo courtesy of Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum/NARA \nIt takes a village to run the world’s most famous house. \nThe White House is often dubbed “The People’s House\,” yet we rarely stop to celebrate the everyday people who make the White House function: the various butlers\, gardeners\, chefs\, and other non-partisan workers known collectively as the Residence Staff. In this final Speaker Series event of 2026\, Dr. Matthew Goetz\, senior historian at the White House Historical Association\, will provide a brief history of the White House Residence Staff from 1789 to the present and share some of the lesser-known stories of workers who not only witnessed history but helped make it. \nThis Speaker Series event will be held on Saturday\, November 14th at 11 a.m. The presentation and Q&A are expected to last 45 minutes. That will be followed by a walking tour where visitors will learn about some of the individual Residence Staff members buried at Historic Congressional Cemetery. \n \nAbout our speaker: Dr. Matthew Goetz joined the White House Historical Association full-time in 2025\, though he previously interned with the history team in 2019. He earned his doctorate in American history from The George Washington University (GW) in 2023\, after which he taught history at GW\, Georgetown University\, and the United States Military Academy at West Point. Goetz has published scholarship in numerous outlets\, including White House History Quarterly and Washington History Magazine\, and has contributed chapters to the edited volumes What the Presidents Read (2025) and The Routledge History of Religion and Politics in the United States since 1775 (2024). \nTickets are only $10 and all proceeds go to benefitting our non-profit mission of historical preservation and education. Space is limited so be sure to reserve your spot today! Keynote remarks will take place inside the Chapel\, and the walking tour will take place on the grounds. The tour is approximately 45 minutes in length. Please come prepared with comfortable clothing and shoes\, as the tours often stray from the main paths. \nThe event is rain or shine. Smoking is prohibited and dogs are not allowed to attend the event unless they are a service animal. \nTo learn more about the White House Workers History Project\, click HERE!\nWant to rock Cemetery Speaker series merchandise\, including shirts\, hoodies\, and more?
