SUMMARY:Death over Drafts at Duffy's!
DESCRIPTION:Join us from 6-7:30pm at our favorite neighborhood pub for Death Over Drafts! \nWHERE? Duffy’s Irish Pub 1901 C St SE\, Washington\, DC 20003 \nThis is a free and informal gathering for the community that will be held monthly on the FINAL (get it?) Tuesday of the month. Come once or come monthly: no experience or expectations necessary! The event will be co-hosted by a “death doula” and a “death midwife” who love getting people to talk about this sometimes-taboo topic. \nThe founder of the Death Over Drafts movement\, Stefanie Elkins\, describes the goal as this: “Death over Drafts is a casual and fun community event to spark connection and is part of a growing movement to destigmatize important conversations on end-of-life.”  \nWhat to expect: \n\nThe event is free!\nAll are welcome!\nYou can still come if you don’t love beer\, there are other snacks and drinks! ;)\nThis is a super supportive community\, but we are not a support group.\nIn this communal environment\, we remind you to be responsible for your own engagement.\n\nAt Death Over Drafts\, the public can enjoy a fun conversation where death is not avoided. There’s no lecture\, but questions will be answered. You never know who you will sit next to\, very interesting fellow guests will be in our midst. We will also have a game called “Death Deck” on the table\, a Death Over Drafts favorite activity! \nEveryone dies\, and talking about it won’t kill us. \nYour hosts for the evening will be the Death Doula in Residence at Congressional Cemetery\, Laura Lyster-Mensh\, and Death Midwife\, Robin Miniter. \nDon’t ghost us! Let us know to expect you by CLICKING HERE

SUMMARY:Death Cafe at Congressional Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:We welcome you to join us at one of our monthly Death Cafes at Historic Congressional Cemetery. \nAs an active burial ground\, Historic Congressional Cemetery is well acquainted with death\, but just what is a Death Cafe? \nDeath Cafe is a global movement to encourage discussion about the often-taboo subject of death. These are intimate informal gatherings where we discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea to remind us of comfort and sweetness even in difficult times. There is no agenda other than providing a space for an open-ended conversation. \nPlease join us to explore these topics in the spirit of curiosity and wonder. Please keep in mind these gatherings are not meant to offer or replace grief counseling. In the interest of privacy and being present\, we ask that these conversations remain in the room and there be no recording\, note-taking\, or personal details shared afterward. \nFollow this link for more about Death Cafe history and concept. \nAt Congressional Cemetery\, our Death Cafes are facilitated by a rotating slate of volunteers in the region\, each bringing their own unique energy and way to make space for the conversation. Our Death Doula in Residence\, Laura Lyster-Mensh\, represents the cemetery  for these evenings. \nCongressional Cemetery offers these unique conversations free of charge\, and offers tea and sweets in the tradition of death cafes around the world. We do ask that you consider bringing a food or beverage item to share\, or a suggested $5 donation\, to help cover event costs. \nDue to space limitations and to allow us to offer an intimate conversation\, please reserve a chair for the dates you will be joining us. To be on the waitlist for any unavailable dates\, use the form or please email Laura at deathdoula@congressionalcemetery.org \nRESERVE A SEAT AT AN UPCOMING DEATH CAFE HERE \nFacilitators for 2024: \nMarch 7     Sarah La Rocca (Congressional Cemetery) \nApril 4    Laura Lyster-Mensh (Congressional Cemetery) \nMay 2     Robin Miniter \nJune 6     Diane Ullius \nAugust 1     AJ Orlikoff (Congressional Cemetery) \nSeptember 5    Kitty Linton (Congressional Cemetery) \nOctober 3     Lisa Yanez \nNovember 14    Sam Stebbins \nDecember 5     Lisa Munsat

SUMMARY:Big Chair gathering: meet the artists
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we gather to introduce the newest Message of Hope painting on the cemetery’s famous Big Chair. \nThis informal gathering at 2:30pm on May 3 outside the cemetery gates will introduce the painter of this installation and recent artists\, as well as allow us to honor a recent Big Chair artist who died last month. \nAll are welcome. Come meet the artist\, Elizabeth Marik\, and previous artist\, Heather\, who painted the chair with her son\, Aiden\, who died in last month. \n\n\nFrom the sign on the chair: \nThis spring\, for the season following the vernal equinox\, our Big Chair painter is the artist Elizabeth Marik. The spring chair design includes flowers associated with death and mourning such as marigolds\, daisies\, lilies\, and a white rose. \n\n\n“Together\, they remind us of life emerging. The watery seat invokes the Ganges\, and doorways to the afterlife such as the river Styx\,” Marik said. \n\n\nMarik’s design was previously featured in the second Message of Hope installation in December 2023 along with two other painters\, Michele L.\, and Evelyn M. The candles they depicted were in honor of the annual Worldwide Compassionate Friends Candle Lighting Ceremony and included their motto: “We Need Not Walk Alone.” Compassionate Friends supports families who have lost children of any age. \n\n\nThe first Message of Hope was painted by Heather and Aiden in the fall of 2023 and featured a lighthouse in honor of suicide awareness after they lost a close relative to suicide. This month we join in honoring and remembering Aiden\, who recently died of suicide. In his honor\, the chair now features Aiden’s drawing of Godzilla which he drew for a tattoo he wore. The messages of both Messages of Hope on the Big Chair now become entwined as part of the history of this cemetery. \n\n\nFor more information about our Messages of Hope please inquire in the gatehouse or email: DeathDoula@congressionalcemetery.org \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:This is our final Death Doula Day activity for 2023. \nThis end of year session in our end of life topic will be a celebration and a remembrance of an extraordinary project. Come with a dish to share for a Death Doula Day community meal\, from 11am to 1pm. \nCome remember the activities\, the guests\, the conversations we engaged in over the year and reconnect with others who have been with us one time\, many times\, or even haven’t been able to attend but always wanted to! \nRSVP here. \nWhat is Death Doula Days? \nNo one likes to talk about dying\, right? We do! \nBring your curiosity\, your courage\, and a sense of humor as we sit around the table at the gatehouse (almost) every Saturday in 2023 to explore our worries and wonderment about mortality. Join our new death doula in residence for a weekly series of conversations and workshops about the end of life. Guests will include those who sit with the dying\, care for our bodies\, and help those we will leave behind. We will work on projects like organizing our digital lives\, documenting our wishes\, and telling our life stories. We will play games\, do projects\, hear musicians\, meet artists\, and hear from scholars who explore the end of life in their work. Our goal is to explore a ‘death positive’ way to think about our mortality. You never know who you’ll meet around the table\, but each person who enters the room is a gift to the event. Cake and tea provided. Donations to our host\, Historic Congressional Cemetery\, are warmly encouraged. \nBy facing our fear of death we aim to best enjoy every breath. \nWe explore new topics and have drop-in guests every week. Get the upcoming topics and news by signing up for the Death Doula Day mailing list by clicking HERE. \n

SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Immortalizing memories through photography (special guest\, Kitty Linton)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur special guest will be our own Kitty Linton\, HCC’s social media contributor and photographer. The exercise she will lead will be from 10:30am to 11:30. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nKitty is a professional photographer originally from London\, England and when she’s not taking photos of the cemetery\, she is documenting the living. \nShe has been fascinated by the technology and power of photography since she was quite young and is passionate in her pursuit of creatively capturing people’s most meaningful memories.\nKitty sees the profound impact photography has on the way we remember others\, and the way we perceive our own permanence. \nHave you ever found an old photograph tucked away in a dusty album and felt a rush of memories flooding back? The sight of a familiar face\, the backdrop of a special place\, or a moment with a loved one – these are triggers for our memories\, like keys that unlock the doors to our past. \nYour assignment for this session is to bring one photograph\, printed or digital\, that captures a memory with someone who has died. We will focus on the memory within the photo\, very specifically\, not the before or after or the story of that person. Just that memory within the frame. \nBy extension\, we will be exploring the role of photographs in our relationships with people and how we will live on after death. \nWe will also share a list of resources to dig deeper into this topic. How can we organize and save these memories? Is there a difference between digital and printed? Photos copied from other photos? Manipulated images. And the newer technologies that may change our relationship with photography. \nAnd\, rumor has it\, a photo may be taken on this date\, using an older technology and creating a single original image. With Kitty in the room we are likely to leave the room with a new view of photography and photographs. \n\n\nWe explore new topics and have drop-in guests every week. Get the upcoming topics and news by signing up for the Death Doula Day mailing list by clicking HERE. \nAll are welcome. In fact\, bring a family member or friend! Do rsvp so we can have enough chairs and snacks prepared by clicking HERE.

SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Bodies above and below ground (special guest\, Margaret Canilang) \nOur special drop in guest will be Margaret Canilang\, HCC Director of Conservation. As always when we have a special guest for Q&A this is from 10:30am to 11:30am. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nFrom her HCC official bio: \nIn 2012\, fresh out of Savannah College of Art and Design Historic Preservation graduate program\, Margaret Canilang started her journey at Congressional Cemetery\, but her love for cemeteries was already well-developed.  She was fascinated with the conservation science in her classes\, particularly the properties and characteristics of stone.  Even more specifically\, slate.  And what better place to observe stone than in a cemetery?  She was so enthralled\, she wrote her Master’s thesis\, “The Cemetery as a Cultural Institution: Reforming Preservation Initiatives in Garden Cemeteries through Management\, Conservation\, Outreach\, and Protection.“  \nWe asked Margaret to join us for a Death Doula Day to help us better understand what we are seeing\, in terms of human remains\, when we walk through the grounds. Where are the bodies? How many are there? Are they all buried in the ground? Do they all have markers? What is a vault? What is a cenotaph? We have so many questions. Margaret has answers! \nAll are welcome. In fact\, bring a family member or friend! Do rsvp so we can have enough chairs and snacks prepared by clicking HERE. \nWHAT ARE DEATH DOULA DAYS? \nDeath Doula Days on Saturdays 10am-noon at Congressional Cemetery. Free event\, no experience necessary\, donations to support Congressional Cemetery’s work warmly welcome. \nStay up to date on the project and get notice of upcoming topics by joining our Death Doula Day mailing list HERE.

SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:December 2\, 2023 \nThis Saturday’s topic is “What is Loving End of Life Preparation?” \nOur special drop in guests will be Catherine\, Death Project Manager; Gabby Jimenez\, The Hospice Heart ; and Lisa Pahl of TheDeathDeck. As always when we have special guests for Q&A this is from 10:30am to 11:30am. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. This week you get to meet three people who have collaborated together in the past\, hoping to share their tools\, resources\, and information with others who want to provide end of life care without fear or uncertainty. They care about this issue because they want to help improve the way human beings are cared for when they die and when they grieve. They also believe that planning is an act of love\, and logistics are a form of care work. \nCatherine\, your Death Project Manager\, is the creator of the Mortality Workbook\, a toolkit to collect what your loved ones should know before you go\, so that you can rest in peace. \nGabby\, a hospice nurse and an end-of-life doula\, wants people to remember that their experience is not about us\, and the most compassionate thing we can do is meet them where they are\, not where we want them to be. \nLisa is a hospice social worker and co-creator of The Death Deck and The E•O•L Deck\, tools that encourage conversations about what matters most in our lives and our deaths. \nThey will be joining us remotely\, a first-time thing for Death Doula Days! \nMeet our special guests on Saturday and ask them your questions. Examples of questions you may have may relate to the planning stages such as\, what paperwork to start with now? How to have these conversations with loved ones? \nYou may also have questions about the dying process like\, Can they hear us\, and what is important to say at the bedside? Does it hurt them when they stop eating and drinking? Do the medications given at the end of life hasten death? \nAll are welcome. In fact\, bring a family member or friend! Do rsvp by clicking HERE so we can have enough chairs and snacks prepared. \nWe explore new topics and have drop-in guests every week. How do we understand death for military service members and veterans? What are the customs and obligations of our country to service members? How do we memorialize and remember? And how do we find the service records of deceased family members who served? \nAnthony “AJ” Orlikoff\, Director of Public Engagement\, is a dedicated and passionate historian\, educator\, and writer. SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:No one likes to talk about dying\, right?

DESCRIPTION:Gardening for the dead (special guest Leigh Pickering) \nThis Saturday’s topic is: Planting for the Dead (special guest Leigh Pickering the new Horticulture and Grounds Manager at Congressional Cemetery) \nOur special drop in guest will be Leigh Pickering\, who is responsible for the living parts of our favorite cemetery grounds: the gardens\, the grass\, the trees\, and of course the bugs and bioorganisms that populate and pollinate the grounds and beyond. As always when we have a special guest for Q&A this is from 10:30am to 11:30am. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nThis week we get the opportunity to talk about how cemeteries intersect with the people buried and memorialized in a cemetery. Leigh has expertise in both native plants and in use of botanicals. She has a special interest in uses of plants\, as well. So come on down\, get your cup of tea and a pastry\, and let’s learn from Leigh about this special space and the unique considerations of working around the dead while keeping their memories… fresh! \nAll are welcome. In fact\, bring a family member or friend! Do rsvp by clicking HERE so we can have enough chairs and snacks prepared. \nWe explore new topics and have drop-in guests every week. SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:Who protected memorials at BLM fence? (special guest Nadine Seiler) \nThis Saturday’s topic is: Nadine Seiler (special guest) \nOur special drop in guest will be Nadine Seiler\, the “accidental curator”of the Black Lives Matter Memorial Fence. As always when we have a special guest for Q&A this is from 10:30am to 11:30am. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nThis week you get to meet a person who takes death seriously. Specifically\, death of Black people. More specifically\, death of Black people during encounters with police. \nBlack Lives Matter is a phrase whose use tells us more about the user than the meaning\, but at its most basic\, it is that the lives of Black people matter. An idea that shouldn’t be controversial or divisive. \nNadine\, a professional organizer in Maryland\, was one of many who were drawn to the place outside the White House that is now known as Black Lives Matter plaza. When Nadine began spending time there during the George Floyd protests\, she took special interest in the names\, the memorials\, the artwork\, the emotional and often satirical materials left on and around the chain link fence that surrounded the White House grounds and beyond. People came from all over the world to experience that fence\, and often to bring memorials and their grief to be shared there. \nNadine saw the way these items were trampled\, weather-beaten\, and vandalized\, and she saw a job to do. No one asked her\, and she was helped eventually by others\, but she acted to care for the memorials on her inimitable initiative. You will have seen her picture in countless press photos\, with her signature pussy hat and t-shirts and signs. And mascara. You can read many interviews with Nadine\, but you can also see the items from that historic time in person in museum collection\, and digital archives. The Black lives that were named and honored on the BLM Memorial Fence live on because Nadine protected them: with zip ties and tape and often overnight sleeping next to the fence. She withstood weather\, counterprotesters\, and violent threats to honor those lives. \nMeet Nadine on Saturday and ask her your questions about why it mattered\, what the Fence collection means\, and get tips on being an independent advocate in a divided world. What did “black lives matter” mean to Nadine? \nWashington Post: A White House fence’s Black Lives Matter art has been saved for history \nNPR: She guarded the Black Lives Matter memorial. Now\, she’s working to protect its art \nDistrict of Columbia Public Library DIGDC: Black Lives Matter Memorial Fence Photographs Collection \nNBC Washington: Two Activists Unite to Protect BLM Signs at Lafayette Square \nAll are welcome. In fact\, bring a family member or friend! Do rsvp by clicking HERE so we can have enough chairs and snacks prepared. \nWe explore new topics and have drop-in guests every week. Come ask questions and learn from this wise\, kind person. \nAll are welcome. In fact\, bring a family member or friend!
