SUMMARY:Death Cafe at Congressional Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:We welcome you to join us at one of our monthly Death Cafes at Historic Congressional Cemetery. \nAs an active burial ground\, Historic Congressional Cemetery is well acquainted with death\, but just what is a Death Cafe? \nDeath Cafe is a global movement to encourage discussion about the often-taboo subject of death. These are intimate informal gatherings where we discuss death while eating cake and drinking tea to remind us of comfort and sweetness even in difficult times. There is no agenda other than providing a space for an open-ended conversation. \nPlease join us to explore these topics in the spirit of curiosity and wonder. Please keep in mind these gatherings are not meant to offer or replace grief counseling. In the interest of privacy and being present\, we ask that these conversations remain in the room and there be no recording\, note-taking\, or personal details shared afterward. \nFollow this link for more about Death Cafe history and concept. \nAt Congressional Cemetery\, our Death Cafes are facilitated by a rotating slate of volunteers in the region\, each bringing their own unique energy and way to make space for the conversation. Our Death Doula in Residence\, Laura Lyster-Mensh\, represents the cemetery  for these evenings. \nCongressional Cemetery offers these unique conversations free of charge\, and offers tea and sweets in the tradition of death cafes around the world. We do ask that you consider bringing a food or beverage item to share\, or a suggested $5 donation\, to help cover event costs. \nDue to space limitations and to allow us to offer an intimate conversation\, please reserve a chair for the dates you will be joining us. To be on the waitlist for any unavailable dates\, use the form or please email Laura at deathdoula@congressionalcemetery.org \nRESERVE A SEAT AT AN UPCOMING DEATH CAFE HERE \nFacilitators for 2024: \nMarch 7     Sarah La Rocca (Congressional Cemetery) \nApril 4    Laura Lyster-Mensh (Congressional Cemetery) \nMay 2     Robin Miniter \nJune 6     Diane Ullius \nAugust 1     AJ Orlikoff (Congressional Cemetery) \nSeptember 5    Kitty Linton (Congressional Cemetery) \nOctober 3     Lisa Yanez \nNovember 14    Sam Stebbins \nDecember 5     Lisa Munsat

SUMMARY:Dia De Los Muertos At Congressional Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an extraordinary celebration of Dia De Los Muertos at Historic Congressional Cemetery. In collaboration with special guest and Capitol Hill resident\, Rosa Moreno\, we will transform the chapel in the center of our grounds into a place of learning\, remembrance\, and celebration of the “Day of the Dead.” \n“I have been in DC for 14 years and a resident of the Capitol Hill area. I was born and raised in the southwest\, AZ and TX. I come from a Mexican-American family that has been in the southwestern part of the country for generations. \nDay of the dead is one of my favorite holidays because we get to set aside a day to celebrate our loved ones that have passed. It’s a festive celebration full of life and joy. \nIt’s a great pleasure to celebrate this year in such a historic and treasured location.  Excited to come together with our neighbors to share this special occasion.” \nDia de Los Muertos is a celebration that honors ancestors and connects the living with the dead. For our celebration\, we welcome the public to join us in the spirit of the holiday by bringing your memories to add to a community ofrenda at the cemetery. Bring photos of people you have loved and have lost to death as well as mementoes representing them: the foods and symbols of the things they loved and memories you shared. We will share stories about those who are gone\, learn about the traditions of Dia De Los Muertos and similar customs around the world\, and join the community around remembrance and mourning. \nOn November 2 at 11am\, guests are invited to join us at the historic chapel in the center of the cemetery where an enormous community ofrenda will honor the ancestors. The public is welcomed to bring photos of loved ones to add to the community ofrenda\, as well as foods to share that your person or people enjoyed. Join us to decorate sugar skulls\, make paper flowers\, and learn about the holiday. No experience necessary. \nIn addition\, the cemetery is collaborating with Crayola Flowers for a special way to celebrate the holiday\, beautify our grounds\, and honor those buried at our historic cemetery. Participants can purchase flowers to bring to the graves of loved ones and any graves with special meaning to you. The cemetery will also have flowers available for our Dia De Los Muertos participants to decorate graves of your choice throughout the cemetery. \nAt the end of the celebration we will gather outside in a procession around the chapel and out to open the gate to bid the ancestors farewell\, inviting them to return again next year. \nAre you joining us? CLICK HERE to let us know to expect you. You will receive a reminder a few days before November 2. \nNotes: \n·      What is an ofrenda? CLICK HERE \n·      Let’s bring copies of photos\, only\, please. You are welcome to scan photos and email them for us to print them out. \n·      All items on the ofrendas will be donated or recycled if not taken home on the 3rd. \n·      Please bring foods to share that your person enjoyed in disposable containers or ones you will bring home. \nThis is a community event and free of charge offered by the Cemetery’s nonprofit foundation. Donations to the Foundation are welcomed and help us open the grounds for these impactful gatherings. Donations of your time helping out during the event\, of flowers\, and of food to share all serve our goal in offering death education and awareness activities at our historic cemetery\, the Greatest Undertaking in DC! \nQuestions? You can reach our Death Doula in Residence\, Laura Lyster-Mensh at Deathdoula@congressionalcemetery.org \nLearn more: \nPBS News Hour \nWhat is Día de los Muertos? SUMMARY:Collaging Memory: A Reflective Writing Workshop on Grief and Remembrance
DESCRIPTION:As part of our Death Awareness programming at Congressional Cemetery and facilitated by our Death Doula in Residence\, join us for a writing workshop by teaching artist and playwright Mary Hall Surface. \nDiscover how reflective writing and visual art can offer a creative way to engage with loss. Inspired by 20th-century African American artist Romare Bearden’s collage Tomorrow I May Be Far Away\, participants will experience a process that holds both grief and remembrance. Designed for all\, not just “writers\,” the workshop embraces close outward looking at art and rich inward-looking through reflective writing to begin to build new relationships with loved ones who have passed on. \nMary Hall Surface is a teaching artist\, playwright\, and theatre director and producer whose great-grand parents and great aunts are interred at Congressional Cemetery. She is a popular presenter of workshops in creative and reflective writing for the Smithsonian Associates\, National Gallery of Art\, the Kennedy Center\, Harvard’s Project Zero Classroom and more. \nTO RESERVE A PLACE FOR THIS WORKSHOP CLICK HERE

SUMMARY:Choose Your Own (Corpse’s) Adventure
DESCRIPTION:The one thing we cannot do for ourselves is take care of our body after we’ve died.\nBut that shouldn’t keep us control freaks from telling others what to do! What can you do with a dead human? How soon do you need to do it? What are the options and prices? \nCome plan your body’s journey after you have left it behind! \nThis will be a participatory activity using a tabletop game we have created to design our own body’s journey after death. Along the way\, learn about ideas like building coral reefs or making jewelry from remains. \nLearn about ways to donate your body to science\, freeze it for posterity\, and the options for cremation (fire or water) or composting. Understand the difference between green burial and other burials. Curious about embalming? CO2 impact? The financial aspects of what happens to our remains? \nJoin us at 10 AM\, September for a FREE workshop and death awareness activity at Congressional Cemetery. \nAny questions? Email Laura at deathdoula@congressionalcemetery.org \nRSVP for this event HERE! \n  \nDonations to our foundation support this free program. The suggested donation for our Death Dialogues gatherings is $5\, but more generous support gives more people access to these programs. \nFor more information on our Death Dialogue programming\, click HERE

SUMMARY:Design your own Epitaph & Tombstone Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Designing your own gravestone and epitaph is a form of autobiography. How do you sum up your life in a single glance? What message do you want so durably created? \nJoin us at 10 AM\, August 31st\, for a FREE workshop and death awareness activity at Congressional Cemetery. \nBring your curious self\, any writing implement and paper you prefer\, and walking shoes for visiting graves on uneven ground. Special credit for bringing quill and ink on parchment. \nOur Death Doula in Residence\, Laura Lyster-Mensh\, will help us consider what information and imagery we wish to leave behind. We will visit a few graves in the cemetery for inspiration. We will also consider types of stone\, aesthetic preferences\, and how memorial styles evolve over time. \nMost of all\, we will practice thinking of ourselves as mortals and imagine what meaning and legacy matter most to us when we are no longer here to speak or edit it. \nNo prior knowledge or artistic talent is required—just a willingness to reflect on ourselves and the memories we want to craft with our lives. \nAny questions? SUMMARY:Death over Drafts at Duffy's!
DESCRIPTION:Join us from 6-7:30pm at our favorite neighborhood pub for Death Over Drafts! \nWHERE? Duffy’s Irish Pub 1901 C St SE\, Washington\, DC 20003 \nThis is a free and informal gathering for the community that will be held monthly on the FINAL (get it?) Tuesday of the month. Come once or come monthly: no experience or expectations necessary! The event will be co-hosted by a “death doula” and a “death midwife” who love getting people to talk about this sometimes-taboo topic. \nThe founder of the Death Over Drafts movement\, Stefanie Elkins\, describes the goal as this: “Death over Drafts is a casual and fun community event to spark connection and is part of a growing movement to destigmatize important conversations on end-of-life.”  \nWhat to expect: \n\nThe event is free!\nAll are welcome!\nYou can still come if you don’t love beer\, there are other snacks and drinks! ;)\nThis is a super supportive community\, but we are not a support group.\nIn this communal environment\, we remind you to be responsible for your own engagement.\n\nAt Death Over Drafts\, the public can enjoy a fun conversation where death is not avoided. There’s no lecture\, but questions will be answered. You never know who you will sit next to\, very interesting fellow guests will be in our midst. We will also have a game called “Death Deck” on the table\, a Death Over Drafts favorite activity! \nEveryone dies\, and talking about it won’t kill us. \nYour hosts for the evening will be the Death Doula in Residence at Congressional Cemetery\, Laura Lyster-Mensh\, and Death Midwife\, Robin Miniter. \nDon’t ghost us! SUMMARY:Big Chair gathering: meet the artists
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we gather to introduce the newest Message of Hope painting on the cemetery’s famous Big Chair. \nThis informal gathering at 2:30pm on May 3 outside the cemetery gates will introduce the painter of this installation and recent artists\, as well as allow us to honor a recent Big Chair artist who died last month. \nAll are welcome. Come meet the artist\, Elizabeth Marik\, and previous artist\, Heather\, who painted the chair with her son\, Aiden\, who died in last month. \n\n\nFrom the sign on the chair: \nThis spring\, for the season following the vernal equinox\, our Big Chair painter is the artist Elizabeth Marik. The spring chair design includes flowers associated with death and mourning such as marigolds\, daisies\, lilies\, and a white rose. \n\n\n“Together\, they remind us of life emerging. The watery seat invokes the Ganges\, and doorways to the afterlife such as the river Styx\,” Marik said. \n\n\nMarik’s design was previously featured in the second Message of Hope installation in December 2023 along with two other painters\, Michele L.\, and Evelyn M. The candles they depicted were in honor of the annual Worldwide Compassionate Friends Candle Lighting Ceremony and included their motto: “We Need Not Walk Alone.” Compassionate Friends supports families who have lost children of any age. \n\n\nThe first Message of Hope was painted by Heather and Aiden in the fall of 2023 and featured a lighthouse in honor of suicide awareness after they lost a close relative to suicide. This month we join in honoring and remembering Aiden\, who recently died of suicide. In his honor\, the chair now features Aiden’s drawing of Godzilla which he drew for a tattoo he wore. The messages of both Messages of Hope on the Big Chair now become entwined as part of the history of this cemetery. \n\n\nFor more information about our Messages of Hope please inquire in the gatehouse or email: DeathDoula@congressionalcemetery.org \n\n\n
