SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:This is our final Death Doula Day activity for 2023. \nThis end of year session in our end of life topic will be a celebration and a remembrance of an extraordinary project. Come with a dish to share for a Death Doula Day community meal\, from 11am to 1pm. \nCome remember the activities\, the guests\, the conversations we engaged in over the year and reconnect with others who have been with us one time\, many times\, or even haven’t been able to attend but always wanted to! \nRSVP here. \nWhat is Death Doula Days? \nNo one likes to talk about dying\, right? We do! \nBring your curiosity\, your courage\, and a sense of humor as we sit around the table at the gatehouse (almost) every Saturday in 2023 to explore our worries and wonderment about mortality. Join our new death doula in residence for a weekly series of conversations and workshops about the end of life. Guests will include those who sit with the dying\, care for our bodies\, and help those we will leave behind. We will work on projects like organizing our digital lives\, documenting our wishes\, and telling our life stories. We will play games\, do projects\, hear musicians\, meet artists\, and hear from scholars who explore the end of life in their work. Our goal is to explore a ‘death positive’ way to think about our mortality. You never know who you’ll meet around the table\, but each person who enters the room is a gift to the event. Cake and tea provided. Donations to our host\, Historic Congressional Cemetery\, are warmly encouraged. \nBy facing our fear of death we aim to best enjoy every breath. \nWe explore new topics and have drop-in guests every week. Get the upcoming topics and news by signing up for the Death Doula Day mailing list by clicking HERE. \n

SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Immortalizing memories through photography (special guest\, Kitty Linton)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur special guest will be our own Kitty Linton\, HCC’s social media contributor and photographer. The exercise she will lead will be from 10:30am to 11:30. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nKitty is a professional photographer originally from London\, England and when she’s not taking photos of the cemetery\, she is documenting the living. \nShe has been fascinated by the technology and power of photography since she was quite young and is passionate in her pursuit of creatively capturing people’s most meaningful memories.\nKitty sees the profound impact photography has on the way we remember others\, and the way we perceive our own permanence. \nHave you ever found an old photograph tucked away in a dusty album and felt a rush of memories flooding back? The sight of a familiar face\, the backdrop of a special place\, or a moment with a loved one – these are triggers for our memories\, like keys that unlock the doors to our past. \nYour assignment for this session is to bring one photograph\, printed or digital\, that captures a memory with someone who has died. We will focus on the memory within the photo\, very specifically\, not the before or after or the story of that person. Just that memory within the frame. \nBy extension\, we will be exploring the role of photographs in our relationships with people and how we will live on after death. \nWe will also share a list of resources to dig deeper into this topic. How can we organize and save these memories? Is there a difference between digital and printed? Photos copied from other photos? Manipulated images. And the newer technologies that may change our relationship with photography. \nAnd\, rumor has it\, a photo may be taken on this date\, using an older technology and creating a single original image. With Kitty in the room we are likely to leave the room with a new view of photography and photographs. \n\n\nWe explore new topics and have drop-in guests every week. Get the upcoming topics and news by signing up for the Death Doula Day mailing list by clicking HERE. \nAll are welcome. In fact\, bring a family member or friend! Do rsvp so we can have enough chairs and snacks prepared by clicking HERE.

SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Bodies above and below ground (special guest\, Margaret Canilang) \nOur special drop in guest will be Margaret Canilang\, HCC Director of Conservation. As always when we have a special guest for Q&A this is from 10:30am to 11:30am. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nFrom her HCC official bio: \nIn 2012\, fresh out of Savannah College of Art and Design Historic Preservation graduate program\, Margaret Canilang started her journey at Congressional Cemetery\, but her love for cemeteries was already well-developed.  She was fascinated with the conservation science in her classes\, particularly the properties and characteristics of stone.  Even more specifically\, slate.  And what better place to observe stone than in a cemetery?  She was so enthralled\, she wrote her Master’s thesis\, “The Cemetery as a Cultural Institution: Reforming Preservation Initiatives in Garden Cemeteries through Management\, Conservation\, Outreach\, and Protection.“  \nWe asked Margaret to join us for a Death Doula Day to help us better understand what we are seeing\, in terms of human remains\, when we walk through the grounds. SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:December 2\, 2023 \nThis Saturday’s topic is “What is Loving End of Life Preparation?” \nOur special drop in guests will be Catherine\, Death Project Manager; Gabby Jimenez\, The Hospice Heart ; and Lisa Pahl of TheDeathDeck. As always when we have special guests for Q&A this is from 10:30am to 11:30am. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. This week you get to meet three people who have collaborated together in the past\, hoping to share their tools\, resources\, and information with others who want to provide end of life care without fear or uncertainty. They care about this issue because they want to help improve the way human beings are cared for when they die and when they grieve. They also believe that planning is an act of love\, and logistics are a form of care work. \nCatherine\, your Death Project Manager\, is the creator of the Mortality Workbook\, a toolkit to collect what your loved ones should know before you go\, so that you can rest in peace. \nGabby\, a hospice nurse and an end-of-life doula\, wants people to remember that their experience is not about us\, and the most compassionate thing we can do is meet them where they are\, not where we want them to be. \nLisa is a hospice social worker and co-creator of The Death Deck and The E•O•L Deck\, tools that encourage conversations about what matters most in our lives and our deaths. \nThey will be joining us remotely\, a first-time thing for Death Doula Days! \nMeet our special guests on Saturday and ask them your questions. Examples of questions you may have may relate to the planning stages such as\, what paperwork to start with now? How to have these conversations with loved ones? \nYou may also have questions about the dying process like\, Can they hear us\, and what is important to say at the bedside? Does it hurt them when they stop eating and drinking? Do the medications given at the end of life hasten death? \nAll are welcome. In fact\, bring a family member or friend! Do rsvp by clicking HERE so we can have enough chairs and snacks prepared. \nWe explore new topics and have drop-in guests every week. DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Military Death \nOur special drop in guest will be A.J. Orlikoff\, Congressional Cemetery’s own Director of Public Engagement\, for a Q&A on military death. As always when we have a special guest for Q&A this is from 10:30am to 11:30am. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nThis week you will have the opportunity to ask AJ questions about a topic of special interest to him\, and of course for all of us at a place like Congressional Cemetery. How do we understand death for military service members and veterans? What are the customs and obligations of our country to service members? How do we memorialize and remember? And how do we find the service records of deceased family members who served? \nAnthony “AJ” Orlikoff\, Director of Public Engagement\, is a dedicated and passionate historian\, educator\, and writer. SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:No one likes to talk about dying\, right? DESCRIPTION:Gardening for the dead (special guest Leigh Pickering) \nThis Saturday’s topic is: Planting for the Dead (special guest Leigh Pickering the new Horticulture and Grounds Manager at Congressional Cemetery) \nOur special drop in guest will be Leigh Pickering\, who is responsible for the living parts of our favorite cemetery grounds: the gardens\, the grass\, the trees\, and of course the bugs and bioorganisms that populate and pollinate the grounds and beyond. As always when we have a special guest for Q&A this is from 10:30am to 11:30am. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nThis week we get the opportunity to talk about how cemeteries intersect with the people buried and memorialized in a cemetery. Leigh has expertise in both native plants and in use of botanicals. She has a special interest in uses of plants\, as well. So come on down\, get your cup of tea and a pastry\, and let’s learn from Leigh about this special space and the unique considerations of working around the dead while keeping their memories… fresh! \nAll are welcome. SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:Who protected memorials at BLM fence? (special guest Nadine Seiler) \nThis Saturday’s topic is: Nadine Seiler (special guest) \nOur special drop in guest will be Nadine Seiler\, the “accidental curator”of the Black Lives Matter Memorial Fence. As always when we have a special guest for Q&A this is from 10:30am to 11:30am. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nThis week you get to meet a person who takes death seriously. Specifically\, death of Black people. More specifically\, death of Black people during encounters with police. \nBlack Lives Matter is a phrase whose use tells us more about the user than the meaning\, but at its most basic\, it is that the lives of Black people matter. An idea that shouldn’t be controversial or divisive. \nNadine\, a professional organizer in Maryland\, was one of many who were drawn to the place outside the White House that is now known as Black Lives Matter plaza. When Nadine began spending time there during the George Floyd protests\, she took special interest in the names\, the memorials\, the artwork\, the emotional and often satirical materials left on and around the chain link fence that surrounded the White House grounds and beyond. People came from all over the world to experience that fence\, and often to bring memorials and their grief to be shared there. \nNadine saw the way these items were trampled\, weather-beaten\, and vandalized\, and she saw a job to do. No one asked her\, and she was helped eventually by others\, but she acted to care for the memorials on her inimitable initiative. You will have seen her picture in countless press photos\, with her signature pussy hat and t-shirts and signs. And mascara. You can read many interviews with Nadine\, but you can also see the items from that historic time in person in museum collection\, and digital archives. The Black lives that were named and honored on the BLM Memorial Fence live on because Nadine protected them: with zip ties and tape and often overnight sleeping next to the fence. She withstood weather\, counterprotesters\, and violent threats to honor those lives. \nMeet Nadine on Saturday and ask her your questions about why it mattered\, what the Fence collection means\, and get tips on being an independent advocate in a divided world. What did “black lives matter” mean to Nadine? \nWashington Post: A White House fence’s Black Lives Matter art has been saved for history \nNPR: She guarded the Black Lives Matter memorial. Now\, she’s working to protect its art \nDistrict of Columbia Public Library DIGDC: Black Lives Matter Memorial Fence Photographs Collection \nNBC Washington: Two Activists Unite to Protect BLM Signs at Lafayette Square \nAll are welcome. As always when we have a special guest for Q&A this is from 10:30am to 11:30am. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nOkay\, so this week is special. Your death doula in residence is an ardent fan of the Dying Kindness podcast\, and having Cianna visit our amazing cemetery and meeting our Death Doula Day community is a dream come true. \nWe strongly suggest that you take a bit of time to read the list of topics for Dying Kindness and listen to some episodes. Cianna is on a mission to help us be kind to those we leave behind. She knows from experience why this is so important. Let’s not leave angry mourners: it’s a bad look. \nYou can leave money and jewelry and heirlooms\, but it is probably most important to leave as little chaos and confusion as you exit the world. That’s the kindness. That’s a profound kindness. \nShe’s kind\, Cianna. Kind enough to come visit us in person and share her journey. DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: September 30\, 2023 Corpse Pose (special guest\, Laura Gabisch) \nOur special drop in guest will be Laura Gabisch\, who teaches yoga classes at Congressional Cemetery. As always when we have a special guest for Q&A this is from 10:30am to 11:30am. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nGabisch\, who has been a frequent visitor to the Death Doula Days hours on Saturdays this year\, intrigued us all with a mention of Shavasana\, or Corpse Pose\, as she was heading over to lead a yoga class. \nWe have to know more! So we’ve asked Laura G. to join us to talk about yoga and breathing and the role and meaning of the corpse pose. Laura will lead us in a bit of “chair yoga” as well. \nLaura “Narayani” Gubisch is a long time hatha yoga teacher focused on the practice of relaxation\, or corpse pose\, and absolutely loves teaching this pose (and many others) under the beautiful trees at the cemetery! \nAnd to think that Laura the Death Doula just thought of that part of yoga class as “the nap.” \nAll are welcome. DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Bad Art Day! (special facilitator\, Liana Mensh) \nThis week we have a special facilitator and our death doula will be assisting. Liana Mensh*\, an art director here in DC\, is taking the lead on a special experience. During our “Bucket List” session a few months ago it came up that so many of us have a lot of “aspirational” art and craft supplies. We buy them with good intentions but don’t use them\, and they haunt us and taunt us. \nSo\, we’re inviting you to grab those unused marker sets\, glitter pens\, glue guns and watercolors and bring them down. Not to make great art\, though. We’re going to make some bad art and have good fun doing it. We’re going to let go of the projects that are taking up space in our closets and causing us regret. We’ll make stuff for a few hours and then swap items freely: bring some\, take some others home\, and with our newfound creativity and freedom not to do things expertly we will give these items new life. \nBeing death positive is about living fully. Let’s not let our artsy crafty impulses cramp our style! \nPLEASE BRING your unused ART SUPPLIES\, CRAFT SUPPLIES\, interesting objects\, sparkly things\, gewgaws and gimcracks. Feel free to leave them behind after we play\, and adopt other people’s aspirational artsy crafty things. We will donate any extra supplies to UpCycle Creative Reuse Center in Alexandria. \nWear playclothes. \nArrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \n*Yes\, Liana is Laura’s favorite daughter! \nAll are welcome. SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Dying Independently \nIn our conversations this year it has come up often: how do we die independently? Single. Solo. No descendants. No living parents. No partners. \nSo much of the business of dying involves “next of kin.” But of course many of us live independent lives without ties of offspring or partners. Many of us outlive or lose ties with those would usually play those roles. Sometimes our next of kin lose their right to a place in our lives\, and deaths. \nSo\, who executes our will? Who adopts our companion animals? Who fills out the information for the obituary and death certificate and memorializes us the way we want and deserve to be remembered? Who do we want sitting with us as we end our days. Who will follow our wishes about how we wish to die? \nAs careful as we may be in doing the paperwork\, pre-paying\, donating\, and arranging the disposal of our “stuff\,” there is an assumption that there are next of kin that are available\, willing\, and wanted. In an independent life\, these are more interesting issues. \nThis Saturday we’re going to talk about this. We will make space for independent people who want to die well in a world that privileges the partnered\, the parents\, and the parented. We will consider who are the people we want to take care of our needs and values. Whether we have families we can and want to depend on\, it says something that”the hashtag #ToxicFamily has 1.9 billion views on TikTok.” \nAfter all\, ” in 2020\, 27% of Americans over the age of 18 were estranged from a family member.” \nWe’ll think about ways to delegate\, connect\, and embrace choice-based Nexts of Kin. \nAll are welcome. In fact\, bring a friend! Do rsvp so we can have enough chairs and snacks prepared. \nThe conference room is\, cosy\, so please do rsvp by clicking HERE. \nWHAT ARE DEATH DOULA DAYS? \nDeath Doula Days on Saturdays 10am-noon at Congressional Cemetery. SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, Sept. 9\, we are very pleased to present the award-winning feature documentary JACK HAS A PLAN. We saw the amazing and funny film at this year’s DC Independent Film Festival\, where it won the “Best of the Fest” award. The filmmaker\, Bradley Berman\, generously gave us permission for a single screening at Congressional. \nWhen Jack Tuller\, a man with a terminal brain tumor for 25 years\, decides to end his life\, his family and friends struggle to accept his decision. Berman\, Jack’s best friend\, documents his three-year quest to die a happy man\, culminating in a permanent going-away party. The San Francisco Examiner said: “It’s as joyous\, thrilling and funny as any film about death could be.”\n\n\nThe film is\, first and foremost\, a great story about one person’s journey. But it’s also a rich exploration of death with dignity\, end-of-life wishes\, and the idea of a good death. \nWe will begin at 10 am with showing the film which will leave us some time for processing and discussion. This film’s characters show a range of beliefs and concerns that will probably be reflected among us watching the film. We will take on the challenge of talking about issues which may be controversial or emotional with curiosity and courage\, and mutual respect.\n\nAll are welcome. SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Telling our life stories visually (special guest Mary Jo Neil\, Visual Scribe) \nOur special drop-in guest will be Mary Jo Neil\, a “visual scribe” who creates people’s stories and life reviews as graphic images. As always when we have a special guest for Q&A this is from 10:30am to 11:30am. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nWhat does a visual scribe do\, and what does it have to do with death and dying? We have questions and Mary Jo will have answers and show and tell! If you want a preview\, check out this website: VEOLI for examples of visual obituaries\, life reviews\, and other ways to “visualize end of life issues.” \nAll are welcome. In fact\, bring a family member or friend! Free event\, no experience necessary\, donations to support Congressional Cemetery’s work warmly welcome. \nStay up to date on the project and get notice of upcoming topics by joining our Death Doula Day mailing list HERE.

DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Companion animal doulas \nOur special drop in guest will be Alexis Mitchell\, a student getting her training as a companion animal end of life doula. As always when we have a special guest for Q&A this is from 10:30am to 11:30am. You are welcome\, of course\, to arrive or leave any time during Death Doula Day office hours 10am until noon. \nMost people have never heard of a “death doula” or an “end-of-life doula” so even fewer have heard of a companion animal eol-death doula\, so I was fascinated to hear from Alexis about her studies at the The University of Vermont. I have questions! And\, I’m sure\, so do you. What drew her to this? How might it differ from supporting dying humans and their families? What are her hopes for this work? \nThis is a topic of special interest for us here. This is Congressional Cemetery\, where dogs in particular are such an important part of the community and we have a special space for memorializing companion animals. \nAll are welcome. In fact\, bring a family member or friend!
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: Fear of death (or is it fear of dying?) \nIt is very common in modern times to avoid talking or thinking about death\, even while we are all likely to live longer than our ancestors. Death is a topic that is avoided with dread\, fear\, even anger. Death positivity is the idea that death is a normal and expected part of living\, and that talking about dying and death openly makes it easier to live authentically and fully. \nThere are costs to avoiding the topic. A lack of preparation can make the end of life unnecessarily chaotic and challenging. Relationships are strained when issues are not resolved or acknowledged. Health issues may not be addressed for fear of “the worst.” \nFear of death also causes those who are elderly\, ill\, or dying to be avoided as well. \nIt takes courage and curiosity to talk openly about death\, but it may be easier with practice. Accepting our mortality can lead to less avoidance and even more freedom to live fully in the time we have. \nThis Death Doula Day we’ll talk about the topic of death phobia\, death anxiety\, fear of death. Some of us have very little of this\, and some of us are impaired by it all the time. We won’t be able to fix the problem for one another but we can bring our fear into the open. \nBring your ideas and tools and strategies to share. There is so much wisdom in the world around this natural fear: let’s explore some of that together! \n\nThis topic will be about fear around our own deaths\, rather than grief or fear of the deaths of others. Sometimes these intertwine\, but mostly we’ll focus on our individual fears around our own mortality.\nThis conversation is informal and not professional psychotherapy. These topics and anxiety around death are marvelous subjects to explore professionally with trained psychotherapists. Getting professional support is life-affirming in the very best sense of the word.\n If this topic brings up strong feelings it may not be a good one to explore in this session at this time. \n\nThe conference room is\, cosy\, so please do rsvp by clicking HERE. \nWHAT ARE DEATH DOULA DAYS? \nDeath Doula Days on Saturdays 10am-noon at Congressional Cemetery. Free event\, no experience necessary\, donations to support Congressional Cemetery’s work warmly welcome. \nStay up to date on the project and get notice of upcoming topics by joining our Death Doula Day mailing list HERE.

SUMMARY:Death Doula Days
DESCRIPTION:This Saturday’s topic is: The junk drawers \nThought experiment: you disappear suddenly and your roomies\, family\, and a cleaning service arrive at your residence. What do they find? How do they make sense of that bottlecap from a certain Saturday at the beach\, the little box containing your grandmother’s teeth\, the Italian Lira bill. Are they valuable? Will they go in the trash? \nWho are you\, according to your junk drawer? What story of your life does your stuff tell the world when you’re gone? \nThis weekend we are facing the difficult topic of death and our stuff. Bring a picture of your junk drawer\, if you dare. Make a list of the miscellany in the flour canister on your shelf. How much is labeled? How many things mean so much to you but won’t even be identifiable to others? Who would you want to have the flotsam and jetsam of your shelves and drawers? \nAll are welcome. In fact\, bring a family member or friend!
